August 22, 20214 yr Greetings. I have an opportunity to get RTX3090 soon and I am wondering if my current build will be able to handle it. I read that this card may produce too much heat etc. I also read that ASUS Srix is the best one, MSI Gaming X trio and ASUS TUF follow. August 22, 20214 yr Author So looks like I may need to upgrade RAM as well. It says 64GB is recommended. August 22, 20214 yr From what I read a couple of weeks ago would the 850 PSU be more of an issue with the 3090 and that much RAM? August 22, 20214 yr ram is sufficient. processor at stock speed is a waste. 3090 should improve performance a bit. R9-9950X3D 32G | RTX5090 | 3T m.2 | Win11 | vkb-gf ultimate & pedals | virpil cm3 throttle | tm boeing yoke | pimax super uw | DCS
August 22, 20214 yr Who is recommending 64GB? I rarely even get above the 16GB mark, much less find myself needing more than 32. I wouldn't bother with more RAM until the day comes that you actually need it. I agree that an 850W PSU is getting close to the ragged edge when running a 3090 hard. I routinely see ~750W on the power meter with mine when the GPU is running close to 100%. You should have sufficient CPU cooling to easily overclock that 9900K to 5.0 GHz on all cores. I got my 9900K to 5.0 GHz on air with an NH-D15 in my portable rig with little effort. I don't regret upgrading from the 2080Ti to the 3090 a bit. But the one change I think would be wise if you go there is to move up to a quality 1000W+ PSU. The overclock is a free performance bump...OK, not free, you've already paid for it, but are currently leaving it on the table. August 22, 20214 yr Author Appreciate all replies. Bob. Based on the link from the first reply it says it is recommended 64GB RAM to run 3090. I was actually surprised. "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 will need at least 64GB of RAM to work well. If you are planning to work with some memory intense programs, or run multiple programs at ones, you should consider adding even more memory." I will then start working on new PSU as suggested. I do not have good experience doing OC. Those who built my PC said they were able to achieve like 3.9 GHz. I may need either educate myself or find someone who can do it safely. August 23, 20214 yr I don't buy the 64GB RAM recommendation. Might be that some applications need buttloads of RAM with the 3090 (think crypto mining), but flight sims aren't among them, at least not yet. Your CPU will boost to ~4.7GHz stock out of the box, but without at least some overclocking adjustments it will throttle back to somewhat below that if the power exceeds TDP for a prolonged period. If your guys said they couldn't get it above 3.9 GHz, you need to seek a second and competent opinion. I've been using EVGA Platinum PSUs in most of my latest builds, although the 9900K+1080Ti portable I built has the same Corsair RM850x that you are using. I haven't looked lately, but 1000W PSUs were pretty scarce the last time I did, maybe 6 months ago. Just beware of the Gigabyte supplies, there's a bad batch of them in the retail pipeline that are failing catastrophically at very high rates.
