SU6 requiring a complete reinstall?

Featured Replies

Just went to update to SU6 as I haven't had time to fly. No update showed in the MS Store or in Xbox app. So I started MSFS and let it do it's checking for updates thing. It does show an update of roughly 465 Mb but the is just an additional option to 85Gig worth of downloads. It's like it wants me to reinstall the whole delux version I have. 🥵

I am SO tired of the updates not working properly. Is that my only option? I have a VERY slow connection and it would take nearly 24 hours to download all over again 🤢

I can empathise with your situation and decided to "cut my losses" by investing in the Steam Premiere Deluxe edition.  A full, new, updated installation of Windows 10 Pro followed by an install of the Steam system.  At 99% this evening, there was a power cut,  and I was expecting the worst. A large company in my village is having a new [further] supply added to their current one and some ******* did something stupid.  An hour or so later and the supply was restored. Waited for modem/router system to come back up then by using the "delete last file parts and the last full folder download" in "Packages", Steam picked up where it had things stored and continued to download the last Gb and a bit.  Complete success!!!  This is something I was unable to do in the MSFS Store" version, so after about 14 hours total, same slow net speed, all seems well and I am delighted to have found something that "just worked".  BR

Glad it worked for you and you didn't lose the complete download. The MS Store is just too unreliable. I am doing a full install again as I had no choice, should have just purchased another copy from Steam (couldn't bring myself to purchase it a second time though). It's a shame when MS's own products don't work together. This entire update process is a mess that needs to be sorted out 😒

It is best to store the main MSFS in an other location or drive.  If the bulk of your files are there, and you point the main installer to that location, It should not redownload everything again.  But with Microsoft, who knows. Anything can happen.

More people seem to have more success with the Steam version when it comes to updates and installation, but it is not perfect.  I have read reports of people having issues with  the Steam Version as well.

Well 18 hours of downloads and I'm back up and running. Shame it came to that. Cant wait to see what the next update brings to this clunky process!

The steam and MS store versions both download install the exact same way in app.

The MS Store version would have done the same thing.

This is always how it is with a big sim updates--it starts w/ how to find the update in the MS Store, typically starts w/ a small file (465mb in the Store) then when you go back into MSFS the actual update size appears in-sim during its install.  Haven't ever had one problem with any installs, reinstalls, nor updates thru the MS Store since Day 1.  Typically people haven't updated Xbox App, MS Store App, or don't know how to use the Store to find the update.

Thanks Noel . I had all updates applied to Xbox App and MS store App. I looked inMS store for updates like I had for the previous year of owning and updating the sim. This time none was available. I logged out of Xbox and MS store accounts and back in with no changes. Until till this point all updates for me went perfectly as you described. For whatever reason this time around I had to download over 85 G, which was the same same as my original install. Not hopeful this will be the last time that happens to me.

No sir.  This was tried in exactly the same manner with the Store version, but after 3 completed latest files downloaded, plus all the "part" files deleted, it still failed to recognise what it supposedly had done!!  I was very surprised that following the complete power failure that the Steam variant, after the deletion of "part" files only, picked up and completed. That's good enough for me.

I may try installing msfs into a freshly completed windows, from my first backup, would recognise the Onestore and Community files downloaded and installed from the Steam installation if placed into the correct MSFS 2020 directory. BR

Sometime between Aug 2020 and now finding an update may have changed slightly, but it's always been there even if it takes a little poking around to find it.  Plus, I want to say SU6 was a massively big update, maybe 85Gb for me, but not sure as I just hit install and left for a few hours and upon returning just needed to go into Content Manager to update various content that was also affected by SU6.

I suppose the update could have been that large. Didn’t consider that. After the large download, all my content and log book were still there. And I didn’t need to reinstall the world updates, they carried over except for the small content updates I hadn’t done yet. Hmmm……without a world update included in SU6, what could have been so large as to have an update as large as the original install itself?

Someone else may recall the actual size.  Perhaps it poked itself deep into many aspects of the software.  FWIW, I just did an 'update' to Asobo's freeware 'Paderborn' airport and was well over 1Gb, for just one airport, and it too was only an update.  I remember I had to update a whole bunch of files in content manager but as you know it's a point and click affair for that all thru content mgr.  Anyway, the MS Store has always been fine for me, and that includes not one but two complete installs--one when I was fooled by Process Lasso which was preventing MSFS from initializing suddenly, out of nowhere so I never suspected that was the culprit so uninstalled then reinstalled.  Then, did a clean install of Win 10 on a 2nd m.2 NVMe drive when a problem w/ failing to set the BIOS to UEFI on my initial install 1.5y ago left me unable to update Win 10.  It has P3D on it as well, but no interest in rekindling P3D--I will likely just clone the recent new install for rapid restores in the event of a drive failure etc.

Not in my experience! I too had to jump through the MS Store hoops to try to download SU4 and 5. Never got 5 to work. Before that everything worked fairly well, especially during the Alpha. I had no problems then at all. I also decided to take the loss and go to Steam. The latest SU was a one click and done affair. Nice!

i have had plenty of download issues with the MS store for other apps.  Getting the steam edition might be a good choice.  You shouldn't have to redownload the entire sim, just update it when it necessary.

Kind regards,
