An interesting factoid about Wings is that it has been in the public domain since the day it was released. When released, the film did not include a copyright notice and, under the copyright laws of the time, the publisher automatically lost all copyright protections. It was probably this one for that quote. Dawn Patrol earned 2 million dollars in theaters in 1939 when a million dollar picture was rare. The net income was tremendous.

 

 

 

Years earlier Howard Hughes made 'Hell's Angels' which earned 2.5 million dollars but lost money because Hughes was extravagant.

 

The story of the making Hell's Angels was turned into the 2004 move The Aviator which won a best picture Oscar.

In the (Oscar best picture) The Aviator, Howard Hughes (De Caprio) was spending money of just about anything, wasn't worried if Hell's Angel's lost money overall. He did the same perusing speed (held several world records), and Katherine Hepburn. She wasn't going to marry anyone though. Hughes dated many famous starlets and became terrified of getting venereal disease or any other pestilence. However he never liked Jean Harlow at all. DeCaprio looked a lot like Hughes.

Hmm, you're right. My memory was bad. I looked it up, it was nominated but Clint Eastwood's movie won best picture, best director (Eastwood), and best female actress. Three out of four!

The Aviator did win 5 oscars, just not the big ones. It was nominated for 11 !

In 1977 CBS made a two-part movie for U.S. television titled "The Amazing Howard Hughes". It was released on DVD in 2002. It is, IMNSHO, the best Hughes documentary ever produced. The DVD is still available but it's really expensive - around US$60 but some local libraries may have copies to borrow. A really good film.

Thank you sir, I purchased one for $5 off of eBay just now (VHS tape). We do have a tape player on the shelf always ready to play once in awhile. Tommy Lee Jones (Hughes) was the star (Captain Woodrow S. Call) of Lonesome Dove, and No Country for old men (Sheriff Bell).

Thanks for bringing this up. I'll look it up. I'm always in the look out for movies about mental illness. And I think the general consensus is that Howard Hughes had a mental illness.

I have a son who has been diagnosed as bipolar. The weirdest thing is that his identical twin is not bi-polar. It doesn't make sense since they are identical twins. Why on earth would an identical twin have one illness and the other not?

Ginger Rogers was engaged to Hughes. He had wrecked his car when she found out about all his extracurricular affairs. She went to his hospital bed and threw every piece of jewelry he had bought her into his face. The Hughes biopic with di Caprio wasn't bad as far as it went. Later, when he surrounded himself with his "Mormon Guard" and became more and more isolated, he was sadly exploited. Several broken needles were found in his arms after his death due to his prescription codeine habit. He suffered from chronic pain due to all his injuries, which led to addiction satisfied by a private physician on his payroll. He spent the last years of his life watching movies or sleeping, with the occasional rally to fend off some legal action.

Once when we visited out sun who lived in Williams Arizona at the time we were on our way to the Grand Canyon.  We were passing Valle Airport and I spotted a Connie on the ramp.

I pulled in and my son knew the woman at the FBO counter.  She got the keys and let us into the Bataan, General MacArthur's personal aircraft, a military version of the Lockheed Constellation, the C-121.  It was the first and only time I ever sat in the cockpit of a Connie.

I was curious also. My wife is a nurse so I asked her. She says that bipolar illness isn't 100% driven by genetics and that it's not at all uncommon for identical twins to not have the same illness. She suggested trying Google . I did and found this:

"Since identical twins share the exact genetic make-up, if bipolar were purely genetic, all identical twins would both have bipolar. However, these studies have shown that if one identical twin has bipolar, there is only a 40 to 70 percent chance that the other will also."

This is in no way intended to be any type of a medical diagnosis or advice but I thought I'd share what I learned.
