November 1, 20214 yr Im quite annoyed that they baked in the tree distance draw line into an all compassing LOD slider. I dont care seeing things ultra sharp at the horizon, but I do want trees as far as possible because I dont like the blurry textures. These textures are easily camouflaged by trees, and it is an easy, almost cost free way of making the sim prettier. I cant use the sim with a LOD slider at 400 with my ultrawide screen (3440 x 1440) with ultra settings in the sim. I probably could get away with trees to the horizon like I could before they broke that mod, though. November 1, 20214 yr I'd recommend 200 if your system can run smoothly at that, 400 is not worth the small gain vs pronounced hit in performance. you might find some mileage running something in between if that floats your boat though. November 1, 20214 yr The most logical value to land on when debating 200 or 400 would be to split the difference and just use 300.

I wouldn't say 400 is a small gain over 200. At 200, photogrammetry buildings lose detail close to the aircraft. At 400 the distance where detail is lost is a lot further. One of the main reasons I ran the older tree mods was trees to the horizon hid a lot of poor textures and things like roads and sometimes rives that sometimes standout far too much in the distance, especially on mountain sides. There are benefits to just increasing tree draw distance as opposed to increasing the distance for everything. Edited November 2, 20214 yr by Glenn Fitzpatrick
November 2, 20214 yr There's a definite difference at 3440x1440--but in the end there are so many scenarios where aerosol density and weather obviate that difference anyway. As some have pointed out: it's a major impactor on the main thread. I vsync at 30fps and have discovered I can set all sliders Ultra, Texture SS 8x, AF 16x, LOD-Objects 200, RS 130 (3440x1440 screen) and now the only setting that matters is LOD-Terrain, the one being talked about here. If I go to the most complex airports I ever use, in the 787 HD, I find LOD-Terrain needs to be 220 or lower in order to have flawless, stutter free performance literally from gate to gate. This is very liberating! So when I initiate a flight, if it's in the 787-10 which I typically only fly into the most demanding airports, I just set and forget LOD-T at 220. So far in the worst weather, at KSFO, FSDT's KORD, RD's CYOW, KJFK absolutely everywhere I now have flawless gate to gate performance! I keep expecting something to sabotage this, but so far so good. If I get into something light (Citation L for example) I can easily set LOD-T to 300 or greater depending on the airport in question. I plan to calibrate lighter planes at the most complex airports (typically smaller and less demanding than w/ the 787 HD) and find out what golden LOD-T setting is for that scenario. So sweet to never have to stop and adjust!
