November 29, 20214 yr Good article on nuclear fusion. https://www.ft.com/content/33942ae7-75ff-4911-ab99-adc32545fe5c Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
November 29, 20214 yr It looks like a subscription to FT is required. Or did I just miss something? November 29, 20214 yr Author Hmmm. I got it while I was looking at Google News. I don't have a subscription. offensive initials not allowed? How do I delete this thing? Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
November 29, 20214 yr Yeah Google News does that. You can read the entire article. Whereas its subscription at the original site. What was the gist of it Noel. There have been quite a few breakthroughs lately and it's looking promising that one of the smaller private entities will get there first.

November 29, 20214 yr Nuclear fusion is only ten years away ... and always will be. This is actually how a leading personality from ITER started his presentation at some conference or other. He meant it as a joke, but since it was more than 10 years ago the joke's on him. This isn't to belittle this and other efforts in the field, but to highlight the massive problems involved. The "smaller private entities" have been reporting "breakthroughs" for just as long, so I'm not too sanguine about their chances, unless one of them's run by Elon Musk!

Yes the old mantra was its 20 years away and always will be. Not anymore though. Yes, there have been breakthroughs in the past to some degree but they are significant now. Mini breakthroughs mount up. Many billions are now being spent and given the environmental issues we face... there's even more of an incentive. ITER is well into construction and yes, its an experiential reactor but it will generate net energy. Then we have all manner of smaller companies beavering away, including The Skunk Works believe it or not. My favourite is General Fusion. Their device is almost akin to an internal combustion engine, complete with pistons. There device is different because they have designed it with a commercially viable power plant in mind from the get go. Rather than a purely experimental device that can never be connected to the grid. https://generalfusion.com/ Edited November 29, 20214 yr by martin-w

Yes if you just search for it with Google Its there to read, seems to be just the link that doesn't allow it. The following quote says it all... Quote “How close it is depends not on time, but on the will, the investment and the commitment of resources to actually get there.” Edited November 29, 20214 yr by martin-w
November 29, 20214 yr For questions about physics, there is no better “explainer” than Sabine Hossenfelder. https://youtu.be/LJ4W1g-6JiY Jim BarrettLicensed Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic, Avionics, Electrical & Air Data Systems Specialist. November 29, 20214 yr Yep, Sabine is a no nonsense physicist. Although some would argue a bit too scathing about some things.
November 29, 20214 yr Sabine's right of course but the focus on Qplasma is more justified than she makes out. Focusing on Qtotal now is like asking the Wright brothers to build a 747. For developmental purposes, getting Qplasma to 1 is the first and essential step, even if it is in just as useless a practical machine as the Flyer 1 was.

When geese come down to the water and land as a flock of several hundred birds. Even more so with flocks of a thousand or more starlings or blackbirds. I've seen such a flock come down the valley one morning just after sunrise when I was counting sandhill cranes. They danced back and forth and up and down in unison as if to music. So many times I've wondered where the commands come from as they abruptly change course moving left or right in a group as if they hear a 'To the right flank,March!' If you've never seen the dance of the starlings you've missed one of life's treasures. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
