FSX.cfg tweaks post SP1

Featured Replies

a thread that collects all of them might be nice. I've been too busy flying myself... but I'd like to see what people are tweaking around now. I know fps are back where they should be (for most of us), but I can't help wanting to make them better. For instance, have people noticed good performance increases from getting rid of default.xml?cheers!

This is exactly what I was going to post when I came here today.I also want to know what tweaks to apply now, post SP1. I am running single-core.rgds,Tero

The best tweak for me was to delete the file and let FSX rebuild one...I did that and went from 7-9fps to 12-16 at KMIA and with the default 20 fps locked. Then did a flight and it pretty darned stayed near 20 all the way. So it was a big improvement for me. Only thing I noticed in turns there is still some jerkiness but I will keep testingSystem is a Dell 8400 three years old, [email protected] ghz/ATIX700 Pro pci express/2GB RAM/ WIn XP Sp2. Not the latest but FS9 is a gem to fly on it. Bill

Yep,We need another good tweek(s) guide to readjust any old tweeks that are no longer needed or need slightly newer setting with SP1 installed.>a thread that collects all of them might be nice. I'm working on adjusting my PDF document to the Post-SP1 world. Not too many things have actually changed - just a few new possibilities to add to your CFG file, and indeed LESS need for tweaking due to the improvements in the service pack!Once updated, I'll repost it to the Tips & Tricks area. -Greg

Vast improvement here too by deleting my over-tweaked fsx.cfg and letting the sim build a brand new one :-)Eagle

Hi Greg; I'd like to know whether or not you think there would be any further improvements to be had by reloading Matt Fox's texture modifications. I'm not aware that Aces halved the size of the texture bitmaps in SP1 (don't think so), so I think there would be still more to be gained by running those scripts post-SP1. I can't find his latest scripts, but I still have the old ones. Collectively, these improved my fps quite significantly, and I think it would be good to try for even more "headroom". Has anyone else done this?Regards,

Along with the CFG tweaks, I'd also be interested in hearing whether or not any of the other fixes still help. Stuff like the autogen texture reduction, etc. The angle I'm taking here is that now that we've (for the most part) got pretty good default performance, what sorts of things can we do to increase available overhead frames per second so that addons can be added without dropping the sim back to a slideshow. I haven't had a lot of time to do anything other than reinstall FSX, install the SP, and do an odd test flight here and there.Incidentally, and I know this should go in the feedback thread, I want to thank ACES for removing whatever cosmic black hole over Seattle that caused it to be unflyable with the original release. :D It's smooth sailing all the way from Puyallup (1S0) to Everett (KPAE) now.-Jon

some quick tests:texturemultibandwidth up to 400 didn't seem to have a negative effectLOD_radius up to 7.5 with fairly realistic results and little loss in fpsFiber frame fraction up to 0.5 with good results, I think this one really helps with the blurries, especially with autogen on maxmy tests were over van nuys (used to be unflyable pre-sp1 <10fps)fps set to unlimitedeverything on max except lightbloom, cloud distance, and zero traffic (until I get my traffic back up)untweaked = 40fps averagetweaked = 33fps average with much better visualsnow to try the default.xml and see how big an effect that has

Yeah please tell us how we can screw up in 5 seconds what took programmers 8 months to do:-lol Its like your windsheild on your car is dirty. So someone says he took some air out of his tires and it fixed it.So we do.Then its hard to see and the gas milage is bad.Someone says he took off the brakes and raised the hood and it fixed it.So we do.Then we crash the car into a tree.RepeatI bet ya 90% of the "fixes" "tweaks" "you are not gonna beleive its" and countless other miracles here are B.S.I wish that another forum was started called AREA 51.Thats where everyone can post their miracle cures and magic .cfgs.Then maybe this forum wouldnt look more like the Enquirer with Elvis sighting.

that was pretty harsh...With a pretty low end computer I think tweaking can make the sim from fairly flyable to excellent.Just by renaming the default.xml I managed to squeeze out a little more performance (from 35 to 40 fps)For someone who post sp1 is still getting much lower fps, that could be a good tip.

Not meant to be. Im smilin. Its just one guy tells another limiting the fps causes stutters while another says run it unlimited.Do this,do that, change this........Im afraid people are changing stuff they have no clue what it is or who said it.Then they show back up wanting to know how to fix it.So tweak away........:-)

Been tweaking since fs5 (didn't know much about computers when I was 5 and playing fs1).I am curious what other people find works and doesn't work... its always worth a shot if you know what you did, do only one tweak at a time, test each tweak in a few areas to see if it helps. There may be a few good ones out there still, but I admit I've been flying a heck of a lot more than tweaking since sp1. I can even have road traffic now without a slideshow!

I've gotta do that! Right now! Right away!" Rather than take a measured, patient, methodical approach to things.Pretty soon their system config and their FS is a gunked up mess that even Michael Greenblatt couldn't fix.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian
