Are clouds the best ever now? I'm impressed.

Can you post pictures from when they had the reflections you mentioned?

Well the reflections were dynamic so they wouldn't really show in a photo but here is one from before the raymarched reflections were introduced. (not sure what technique was used before)  The clouds seemed more alive then.

Some great looking rainfall on the approach to Washington National.

I honestly can't tell the difference.

No idea what you're referencing

Well you have to have Live Weather turned ON to begin with.  Its an option found on the "Data" tab located under "General Options".

Then, on your preflight screen (the flight planning map),  in the upper right is a small box that you can select to change your weather.  If you click in that small box a new page will appear and on the left are choices as to whether you want to fly multiplayer and if you want to use AI and at the bottom it gives a choice of "Live Weather' or 'Preset' or 'Custom'.  Make sure  'Live Weather' is selected.  If it is then everything on the right side of that screen should also say "Live Weather" and most options for selecting time and conditions are darkened and unavailable.

If you've done these things and it still doesnt work or works intermittently then a full reinstall is probably your best bet because I have no idea what else it might be.

LOL...yes, I have Live Weather on.  As I've mentioned (to the annoyance of many I'm sure), LIVE WEATHER is working with the exception of clouds and their associated precipitation.  Winds, visibility, Barometric pressure, etc, are all "Live"...just no clouds or rain/snow.

Been using FS since 1986/87 and this is one of the stranger anomalies I've encountered.

We have cloud settings for low, medium, high and ultra -- but is there an off setting that we've missed? 😄

LOL...mine are on Ultra and look great when I create my own weather.

About to test out the reinstall at KDWU to see if I get Live Weather and a runway that doesn't look odd.  I also cleared out my Community folder so I'm starting fresh.

Well....

The runway is fixed at KDWU and I got clouds right out of the gates.

However, I returned to the main menu to test out some other locations that were IFR with clouds and I'm back to nothing again.  I wonder if there's some sort of cache that needs to be cleared out.

Restarted MSFS, went back to KCOU with live weather and after a few minutes clouds appeared and it's raining.  Again...I wonder if a clearing of some sort of cache is required.

Do you use either of the sim's caches? If so, definitely delete them and start from scratch.

Not sure what you mean by "use".  For FSX I deleted the shadercache when changing some settings but have never messed with anything in MSFS.  Can you point me in the right direction for this?

Thanks

Under the data menu, I think (I haven't touched the caches for ages), you can select rolling cache or other cache (whatever that was called). You'll be able to see if they are enabled (in use) and also delete them from the menu.

But you've got live weather and clouds working correctly now?

By the way I'm flying from KDWU to KCRW right now. Had to check out KDWU since you've mentioned it so many times 😅

LOL.  I randomly flew to it yesterday and it's a nice little airport on the Ohio river...good surroundings.

I'm getting them in the US but not if I return to the main menu and then load another airport.  I just reinstalled my community Folder and will try clearing the cache out each time, as well as testing out some places outside the US.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Live Weather has always been a bit hit 'n miss, I've just this minute completed a flight in northern Italy. According to the real world there's a great big thunderstorm going on, in Sim however it was nothing more than a large rain cloud. But then came the horrid METAR transitions, once second broken clouds and the next a sudden change to low lying fog and thicker clouds, represented by the G1000 weather radar suddenly showing two new cells that magically appeared as if from no where.

Overall it was a lovely flight, just slightly ruined by the above. (excuse the VR pics)

Awgh. Still a work in progress. Nice screenshots though!

I saw a pilot talking about the problem with METAR... If the beam passes through a gap in the clouds, he said, it will report clear skies, even though it's cloudy. I know nothing about METAR, but took their word for it. But that would certainly result in abrupt transitions, passing from the global weather model to a METAR zone, e.g. cloudy on the forecast to clear skies reported at the METAR station.

However it works, with how hit and miss weather forecasting is (non-METAR) generally, I can believe that a METAR report could be vastly different. I don't see that there would ever be a way to perfectly transition between the two types of report, except of course where they happen to closely correspond with each other.
