Many posts have been written on that, but the short version is that the PMS unit was coded from scratch (and the basic unit is free, so you can try it..), whereas the TDS unit uses the actual Garmin trainer code (like the RXP and F1 units before it..). Can you build the flight plan totally within the PMS unit (as you can with the TDN) or do you have to use the default MSFS flight planner to create a FP the PMS can use? Having correct liveries at airport gates, and real-time inbound and outbound traffic is great. You can even team it with LiveATC delayed by about 30 secs. to hear live coms between ATC and the traffic you see taxiing, taking off, and landing. And for those who want to KISS, AS' Simple Traffic does all of this except uses less than ideal models--they use the default models but correct liveries are largely very solved now as is teaming it w/ Live ATC. It's plug n play, requires no maintenance or install rituals but as I say the sacrifice is that it uses default models. I never hardly notice the models and since the liveries are largely very appropriate it's not a big deal for me, plus light aircraft is also functions in it.
