Aer Lingus F50 - From Shoreham to Southampton...

Featured Replies

For my previous post, I'd come across and included a couple of pictures of an Aer Lingus Airbus A321neo livery, and also a picture of the Fokker F27-500. I like the Aer Lingus livery...especially the older and classic design of it, featuring the tricolor fuselage with a rich green roof and tail, dark green cheatline separated from the roof by a blue stripe and, of course, the iconic (large) stylized white shamrock on the fin... (see pictures, below) ...

I recalled reading somewhere that that Aer Lingus currently has moved on to an exclusive all-jet and all Airbus fleet. Indeed, they now operate only the A320/A321/A330 series of aircraft. Today, while looking for another Aer Lingus a/c, I came across this nice Aer Lingus repaint (thanks to Matt L) for my (Carenado) Turboprop Fokker 50. The last ever Aer Lingus Fokker 50 flight was operated in 2001, more than 20 years ago, on the Dublin-Shannon-Dublin route. It was operated by EI-FKE (my Reg. here is off by one letter, EI-FKF). The rugged and reliable F50 was indeed a remarkable aircraft for its time, and definitely looks attractive in this (classic) Aer Lingus paint scheme. Aer Lingus, though currently an all-jet carrier, been one of the oldest continuously operating airlines in Europe, it is no stranger to props and turboprops. Its historic fleet shows deployment of numerous prop a/c, DC3/F27/F50/Saab340/Short360/Viscounts etc. Specifically, it had deployed 9 F50s between 1989 and 2001.

The Aer Lingus livery has evolved several times in modern times, ending up finally, with an all-white design with a painted tail, with teal-coloured tail and engines, and the unmistakable shamrock logo on the tail. You may e.g., wish to compare the Airbus A321 (of my previous post) with the Fokker F50 of this post. Here, the white shamrock, on the tail, is on a light-green background, whereas in the today's (modern) livery, the light-green shamrock is on a dark-green background. Also, since the (older) livery of this post, notice how the shamrock has now acquired a curious little tilt (aka a leaning) to the right (compared to the straight-up shamrock in the pictures below), and a (supporting) stem to boot too...🙂...The airline says, "The tilt symbolizes our dynamism and speed. The stem keeps the shamrock recognizable and strong...."...

The F50s are now mostly retired.... KLM, the Royal Dutch Airlines, in a respectful nod to its native, the Flying Dutchman, was one of the last operators to retire the Fokker 50...marking the end of Anthony Fokker's (legendary) propellor era, that had started with the Fokker Dr.I, that was flown by another legend, the Red Baron...(two famous characters that both died young, but, helped each other leave behind their indelible marks in aviation history...)...

Please find, below, a collection of pictures of my Aer Lingus F50, lifting off southward from the coastal airport of Shoreham-by-Sea (EGKA)...otherwise known as Brighton City Airport, and then making a right bank, over the waters of the English Channel, on its way, for a short ~50 nm flight, headed toward Southampton Airport (EGHI)...

Thanks for viewing...!!

Great pics. The first flight I ever flew on was an Aer Lingus Fokker 50 from Dublin to East Midlands airport when I was 14.
