So Im in the process of upgrading my CPU/Mobo from an 8700K (5.0ghz on water) to a 12700K (probably on water too)

I wanted to know if there is really any point in overclocking 12th Gen CPU's for MSFS.

I always OCed fpr P3D/FSX and I left the OC for use with MSFS but this CPU is getting old.

Will it make much of a difference with the newer Gen stuff?

Cheers

Not answering your question, however, I would reconsider water. I did that with my current computer and thought it would be quiet but the fans seem way noisier than my previous fan only cooler.

I already have it on water and I dont want to pay to change it.

Unless there is a reason to do so? I think I can keep my same cooler and just buy a bracket.

Yes that makes sense.

I just built a new PC with the i7-12700K (See full specs in my sig)

I have not even bothered to look at overclocking this CPU, the only things I have done in the Bios are enable the XMP1 profile and turn off virtualization. As for cooling I can highly recommend the Noctua NH-D15S (I went for the Black version) I couldn't be doing with water cooling again. Currently at FL370 in the PMDG 737-600 and average CPU temps are around 50 degrees Celsius and average CPU utilization is 18%

I mostly fly the NG.  Do you get great FPS in places like Chicago or London ?

Hi Ron (Greetings to a fellow Ontarian),

With complex aircraft like the PMDG 737 & Fenix A320 I tend to lock my fps @ 30 and by doing this I can run every setting at Ultra with a TLOD & OLOD at 200. Performance is rock solid everywhere I have flown. With area's that I know could be harder on the system like FlyTampa CYYZ, EGLL or the freeware EGKK (Full version) I might drop the TLOD to 150, everything else stays the same. I actually get better performance in the PMDG than in the Fenix and can maintain 60fps at less demanding airports but I do switch the profile from Ultra to high end. 30fps doesn't bother me really in airliners so I have been flying the PMDG since Saturday on my Ultra settings, temps of the CPU & GPU stay nice and low too,

Let me know if you have any other questions

Richard

Sorry forgot to say I also run full 4K resolution. Look at the stats from Riva in the top left, particularly the boost clock and power draw of my 3080TI (I undervolted it)

Awesome,

How are you liking it?

I have zero regrets about not hanging on for the over inflated pricing for the 13th gen CPU's & 40 series RTX cards, although I am pretty sure my hydro provider will be disappointed that I will not be installing a 1.2KW power supply into my gaming PC 🤣

You definitely have a stronger GPU than me and I'm at 1440P vs 4k.  But yeah I've got the identical cooler and CPU and my temps are basically the same as you hehe

I only bought a 850w psu so now I'm sort of regretting doing that - I'm hoping a stock 4080 will be ok.  I think if it's 400w I should be fine.  But I'll definitely not be able to power those 4090 and 4080 ti's.

Maybe I’ll just toss my corsair water cooler and buy an N15.

I’ve always worried about that word not allowed thing leaking.

Also have a 12700k.  Curious.  What does turning virtualization off do?  thanks

Hi Dave,

I was getting some micro stuttering at first and after doing some research came across a post on the Microsoft flight simulator forum that suggested that turning off virtualization could help so I gave it a try as I have zero requirements for running virtual machines on this PC and in my case it did help.

That was my primary concern. My old i5-9600K was overclocked to 5Ghz on all cores for 4 years and ran cool with my original NH-D15S and I had zero issues so for me it made sense to stick with what I know. I read that the 12th gen intel cpu's run hotter but my temps have been perfect and I used the standard Noctua thermal paste that came with the cooler.

I know it is not lit up like Clifton Hill on a Friday night in the summer (Anyone that has been to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side will get my reference lol) but it is a word not allowed fine piece of engineering and does an amazing job
