Hi Dave,

I was getting some micro stuttering at first and after doing some research came across a post on the Microsoft flight simulator forum that suggested that turning off virtualization could help so I gave it a try as I have zero requirements for running virtual machines on this PC and in my case it did help.

Richard

just curious.  Is this turned off in the bios? and is it listed in bios as virtualization, or some other alias?

Yes definitely the Bios,

On my MSI motherboard it is listed as Intel Virtualization (I think, not near my PC right now) You could check with Asus but it should be pretty much the same. I can check later and take a pic

That was my primary concern. My old i5-9600K was overclocked to 5Ghz on all cores for 4 years and ran cool with my original NH-D15S and I had zero issues so for me it made sense to stick with what I know. I read that the 12th gen intel cpu's run hotter but my temps have been perfect and I used the standard Noctua thermal paste that came with the cooler.

I know it is not lit up like Clifton Hill on a Friday night in the summer (Anyone that has been to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side will get my reference lol) but it is a word not allowed fine piece of engineering and does an amazing job

I got the Clifton hill reference. I’m in Windsor !

thanks for the reply.

just maybe I won’t need to OC 12th gen.

It seems unnatural to build a PC for a flight sim and not overclocked it.

LOL

Honestly this was the easiest new build I have done for my flight sim hobby.

  • Installed components
  • Update BIOS once a successful POST was confirmed
  • Installed Windows 11 Pro
  • Installed MSFS 2020 & other related programs
  • Fly with a big smile on my face

Good luck with your upgrades

Maybe I’ll just toss my corsair water cooler and buy an N15.

I’ve always worried about that word not allowed thing leaking.

I wouldn't worry about it. It will be fine.

I do however replace mine every 3 years, just to be safe. I'm on my 4th now with zero leaks.

However I do tell people if you are NOT overclocking do not bother with water, there is no need.

Also have a 12700k.  Curious.  What does turning virtualization off do?  thanks

Sorry I forgot to post this yesterday, It was one of those days !

I turned off the 2nd & 3rd options below, Intel virtualization Tech & Intel VT-D Tech

thanks richard.  I'll have to check the vt-d.  Turned off virtualization.  First flight "could have" been smoother.  Yet at same time not sure if placebo.  But it was definitely noticeably smooth when taking large taxi turns.

No problems Dave,

I stumbled across a post last night regarding using the render scale to ensure your GPU is constantly ahead of the main thread to help with stutters and from what I have seen today, wow it works.

I typically lock my frames to 30 for the Fenix A320 & PMDG 737 so that is what I have tested today. Here's what you do:

  • In NVCP I set "Vsync" to fast (Still testing which is the best option) and in Riva Tuner selected a frame cap of 30 (Do not use any Vsync in the sim)
  • Load into a reasonable size airport with decent surrounding scenery in any aircraft (I used the 737 - 600) and Liverpool EGGP
  • Turn on developer mode and open the FPS window
  • In the settings I set all traffic to zero including real time online and selected the Ultra profile and made sure every graphic setting was at the absolute highest
  • Start with the TLOD & OLOD at 150 (These really affect CPU)
  • Now go back to the cockpit and take a look at the Main thread timing and GPU timing, what you want to do first is get the GPU as close to 30ms as possible to match the 30fps (bottom box) you have capped. As I had already maxed out every setting I started to push the render scale past 100 to load my 3080TI (I am running native 3840 X 2160) I ended up with the render scale on 140 (5376 X 3024) which gave me a GPU timing of around 28ms
  • Next you start adjusting the TLOD & OLOD and what you need to make sure is that 100% of the time you are always limited by the GPU. I ended up with my TLOD on 150 and OLOD on 200
  • You can also start to introduce traffic as well, I ended up with my traffic sliders around 20% again making sure the CPU timing is always lower than the GPU. I ended up with my main thread around 18ms

I have just done a 2 hour flight from EGGD to LEIB and not once did I see the limited by main thread, I was always GPU limited which is what you want, this gave me an incredibly smooth experience even at 30fps, actually the best I have seen. This may be old news to many but it makes total sense to keep the CPU timing always lower than the GPU as it will have time to send frames to the GPU to be rendered. Stutters and poor performance will happen once you become CPU limited. I will experiment with the Fenix tomorrow as I know that is harder on the system than the PMDG. What I did observe is that the frametime graph displayed by Riva Tuner was incredibly smooth with only the odd tiny spike for the entire flight. It will be interesting to see how this is over a few different situations and what if any changes are required.

You have a very similar rig so you might be interested

Here is the post (I saved it at a section where the process is explained well)

  • 1 month later...

A lot of useful info in this thread, thanks for the info all. I am currently holding back until next week to the Intel's event to see if the pricing on the 12th gen drops and what the 13th gen price range will be like, then build a new box which I haven't done in close to 6 years +.
