Well the fps numbers can be used as a bench mark and with charts like this, you can lower higher impact things before lower impact to get you in that stutter free range which is around 28-30fps for me. So i like to ride the line at dense airports, so with out knowing the fps number, i can't ride that line and get the best bang for you buck. So yes, fps numbers are helpful.

It goes both ways, it can look both very good and very bad, but overall they look good a LOT of the time I think. When they look bad, well...

Don't you remember Bruce Artwick's clouds? That guy couldn't even spell volumetric.
