PADC - snow everywhere ?

Featured Replies

Yesterday I arrived next to my simming PC, DDU-cleaned my last Nvidia driver and installed the Game Ready for SU10, updated the Fenix, and went flying searching for advebrse weather.

Skyvector gave me interesting conditions at PADC. Planned to takeoff from rw 26 and land 15 to get an almost 90º x-wind from starboard.

T was 12ºC, but when I loaded the flight and was presented with fully snow covered rw, and there was snow allover and arround the airport. All was white ( ? )

The landing was an autoland and the Fenix didn't yet tackle it the best way 😕 divertinhg upwind and only after a while trying to return to the centreline...

But the snow ad T=12 ???

I searched for a PADC online camera, and surely found one and there was no snow at all in the rws, nor around the airport. Some mountain peaks did show white patches on the tops yes, but that was about all snow I could see...

Welcome to the wonderful world of snow coverage misery in MSFS. Only thing I wonder is why it took that long 🤣

Greetings, Chris

Flying in the Northern spheres with Live Weather has never worked very good. Only time when it make sense is between Nov and March/April when all is covered with snow anyway. During Summer I'm using weather presets.

Which is basically a total no-go for a two year old sim with more than 10 updates, even more annoying is the fact that this issue is constantly ignored by the devs. Although it affects everybody and the reason is pretty obvious. For me, it is now one of the TOP bugs, totally immersion killing and as you said, it makes basically the use of live weather obsolete for many months in many areas of the world.

You are absolutely right, but today I'm in an ignore-the-negatives mood 😉

With REX Weather Force this is much less of a problem.

But you get weather uniform to the horizon, also not really useful for my homebase in Switzerland...

One of the most annoying things. I wanted to fly around Alaska in the summer. Well, July... everything was snow covered in Alaska... not fun.

Sorry, I didn't really understand what you meant with "weather uniform to the horizon".

Easy: REX is not capable of showing one half of the sky with a complete different weather than the other half. Like an approaching cold front. At least here in Switzerland, weather fronts is the dominant weather appearance. And: due to the Alps, you usually have overcast on one side of the Alps and almost clear skies on the other side of the Alps. Flying a tubeliner over the Alps, this is clearly visible, another thing REX can not do, because REX can only depict one single weather theme at a time for all of the sky to the horizon.

Ah yes, completely agree. Thanks for explaining. REX certainly has it drawbacks. I'll probably keep using it from time to time as it has some advantages too.

I am sure it does, for example if I am really only doing local GA sightseeing, REX would be a way to get rid of this ugly snow coverage misery, on this point you are spot on. But the snow coverage also ruins my immersion if I fly for example from LSZH south over the Alps into Italy, the ridiculous blob of snow always present in the Swiss Alps no matter the current weather or temperature just ruins everything... And for such flights, REX is no alternative to me, as I really like the live weather aspect of having a NON-uniform weather depiction.

Honestly, I do simply not get how this is still not fixed two years after release. Especially because Asobo has the data from meteoblue.

So the issue is not that the snow coverage data from Meteoblue is not detailed enough?

I can confirm. Here in the Swiss Alps, the sim shows full snow coverage on the ground even when it is more than 20 degrees outside. It's quite annoying and makes flying for half the year with live weather not an option. Even in mid winter many lower altitude valleys do not have snow in them most of the time, for example, the Rhone Valley from Lake Geneva to Brig (including Sion). Yet the sim will show full snow coverage in those areas.

It IS, but they for sure have the option to use the higher resolution snow coverage and not like now the lowest possible resolution. If you zoom in in the meteoblue snow coverage map, it is pretty d* accurate, all Asobo would need to do is using the data they have access to. Or at least I think they have access to, I see no reason why meteoblue should provide only a low res version to them. Only thing I can think of is bandwith limit...
