Which RTX 4080 make to buy?

I just can't justify to myself to shelf out 2200 € for a video card alone.

that's why I suggest to wait until after the new AMD cards have launched, perhaps until early 2023, by then hopefully the early 4090 adopters have given way to normal prices, without scalpers tax. 😀

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090,  Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, HP Reverb G2 VR headset @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Aeronautical Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

In Australia, Gigabyte offer 4 years warranty once the card is registered. Although I may only keep the card for 2 years, advertising it with 2 years warranty remaining has helped sell it.

..... and by then the i9 14900k should be a bit closer to release (some tech watchers have it in Q3 of 2023). The future is looking very fast, lol !

The alternative would be a 4090,

or a 2nd hand 3080/3090 at 1/3 the cost.

I have a 3090, I fly VR only just like you, getting 30 fps in the A310, and 30-40 mostly in GA airplanes, with average graphics settings. while 100 fps through frame doubling sounds impressive, constant 30-40 fps is very acceptable and feels very smooth. I expect it will get even better thanks to continued optimizations and improvements by Asobo.

wait for amd 7900xt xtx and see how performance stacks up vs 4080 in msfs. I refuse to pay 1800/2000usd for the 4080 , thats the price here in EU.

Thanks, guys, As I said initially, AMD isn't an alternative for me, call it prejudice (or senile obstinacy). Not, beause I'm in love with the leather jacket guy but I've been with Nvidia cards (and drivers) for 25 years now and couldn't have been happier. The same goes for Intel CPUs.

I still think the best suggestion came from @ChaoticBeauty to watch out what the Black Friday may have to offer. I got the Reverb for 100€ less on a Black Friday, too.

Kind regards, Michael

There is something to be said for staying on the previous gen or at least holding off 6 months. As much as I can afford to buy a brand new card today, I simply won't as that is just helping to increase the prices. The whole mining storm during the pandemic drove up the prices and Nvidia noticed gamers were more than willing to pay the premium hence the current pricing.

The 3080FE which I bought for retail £649 was a relative bargain - I used that for a year and a half and sold it for £650 and bought a second hand 3090FE for £700 a couple of months back. Performance is more than good enough hitting 80fps in some areas along with the 5800X3D. I'll do likewise with this generation if prices permit.

"How Embarrassing for the RTX 4080…"

"Which RTX 4080 make to buy?"

none! just my 20 cents.

"Here in New Zealand, a 3080 gaming x trio was $1399 at launch when I got it... a 4080 gaming x trio is $3299!!!! Nvidia can cram it. Don't get me started on the Obscene pricing of AMD AM5 motherboards either. Normally I liked to be wined and dined before I'm xxxxxxx." 😀

I sold my old 3090 for about 800 Euro. Perhaps that is an option for you? If you only fly in VR, then you would not be using the biggest selling point for 4XXX cards anyway.

Thanks guys. It's a race I can't win.

When I am about to buy a *whatever* card in Summer 2023 some people will suggest me (supposedly properly) that I should wait until the next holiday season when the 50xx cards will turn up which wil be much, much better value.

Kind regards, Michael

I’ll be the guy who tells you to go for it 😀

I just bought a 4080 because I wanted a 4000 series card and didn’t want to play the speculative waiting game on 4090 pricing and availability.

Maybe in six months the 4090 stock and prices will change enough to make the 4080 look like a dumb purchase but I decided to live in the now for a change and went for it.

not necessarily, the 4080s are not selling for a reason. but buying a 4080 just 3 weeks before AMDs GPU launch (doesn't mean I suggest getting one) doesn't make sense. I'd wait 3 weeks and decide then, and for a few $$ more rather get a 4090 than any 4080. you have been warned.
