I would certainly wait for the market release of the AMD RX 7900 XT(X) cards before buying a RTX 4080. Not because I suggest that you buy the AMD card instead, but because nVIDIA will not be able to keep those prices up for the RTX 4080 as soon as the AMD cards are out. I guess they will drop some serious percents after the release of the AMD cards...

Understandable. Still, if it helps, I wouldn't worry about the RTX 4080 going out-of-stock because people are not flocking to buy it like they did with the RTX 4090. Make sure to check daily for a better deal, especially during the Black Friday period.

In here they are dropping steadily but at a very slow pace. NVIDIA are tightly controlling supply in order to keep prices high for as long as possible, and it also doesn't help that gamers are refusing to buy RDNA 2 cards even though they are being discounted heavily and destroying Ampere equivalents in price/performance.

I think it will bite NVIDIA in the end though. They did the same with Turing following a crypto crash, were forced to price their GPUs properly (with the Super refreshes) once AMD responded, and even after that, sales were lower than desired. We have to hope that there won't be another cryptomining boom in the foreseeable future and that Intel will become a good third competitor, and eventually prices should be corrected.

The prices in Germany for the 4080 are way (and I mean WAY) tonight for what you get. 
But as long as people buy it - Jensen will get new leather jackets. And will keep rising the prices. 
 

I have no problem spending a lot of money on a hobby. But what Nvidia is doing is just milking every single drop. So no thanks.

I was going to wait for the AMD card until I found out I would need to replace my motherboard and probably ram as well for it. The 7900XTX will require pci-e ver 5 nd my current board only has ver 4. The 4080 works with ver 4. That said I am having a hard time pulling the trigger on the 4080, there is one In-Stock 2.5 hours away. My current system (5800 x3D, 6800 XT) runs MSFS in Ultra almost always at 82fps, 50% refresh rate @ 164mhz at 2560x1440 res, my monitors max. I keep thinking that's alot of $$$ for something I might not even see any difference with. 

The difference in fps between the cheapest and most expensive is perhaps 2-3%.
Pricewise it might be 23%….

I think there are already a hand full of threads on Nvidia vs. AMD, but I'd be thankful for more suggestions on the RTX 4080.

The fps difference  may be minor (thanks for pointing this out) but the difference in general quality and notably cooling may be more important. 

I'll follow @ChaoticBeauty's suggestion to watch at least over black Friday, though.

No, this is not true - you can absolutely use the 7900XTX on a Gen4 board! 

 

You may be confusing this with the Ryzen 7000 series CPUs - these DO need a new motherboard and RAM. But not the GPU, that you can drop into your current system

No kidding....they're in stock at my microcenter.  Maybe I will be a silly boy and go buy one.  1279 is the cheapest MSI - looks tempting. Lol

If you read the Specs, they say Gen 5. I could have used my 6800XT with my old Gen2 board but it wouldn't get the full performace from it. I figure the same using a Gen 5 card in a Gen 4 m/b.

All specs I can find list the card as Gen 4.0.

I just spoke directly with AMD yesterday and they said the 7900xtx will work just fine with my 850w PSU and the 2x 8pin connectors.

And yet my Zotac 1080 Ti has run problem free for 5 years and still going strong. Every manufacturer has their lemons.
