PMDG 737 Minimums RST Button

Featured Replies

Something about this button has been bothering me lately. When pushed, the setting you have disappears and one would think that it would have been reset to the default value rather than the 5467 or 7689 or whatever high alt number you had it set to. However, it doesn't. It just makes it disappear. If you try to set it again it just shows up on the last figure you had it set to so now you need to start the never ending scroll to whatever number you need it set to. Makes me wonder why RST is written on it which I presume means "reset", doesn't it?

Is this correct behaviour for this button? Does the real aircraft do the same thing or does it actually reset the figure?

As an aside on this subject and after having yet another omron switch fail on my Corsair M65 Pro I introduced the mouse to my persuader (hammer). I have had to replace the mouse every 8 months for a few years now and Amazon are no doubt sick of replacing it so not wanting to ever see another one again and in order to give Amazon a break I chose the cathartic action of reducing it to shrapnel. Anyway, the sluggish nature of setting the minimums of this aircraft annoyed me so much I bought a mouse with a free wheeling button for the wheel and this has sped up this annoying process no end. I have gone back to Razer with a Basilisk V3 and frankly, it's a far superior mouse in every way to that hateful Corsair frustrater and because of this new-to-me feature it has fixed my "minimum setting" frustrations.

Yes, that's correct.

Is there a way to get mouse acceleration or some better way to input big numbers on the minimums dial? It's painfully slow when you have to enter something greater than 500 feet.

Before I got the new mouse with this free-wheel feature I used to hold the shift key and the relevant mouse button AND scroll the wheel. That was the quickest way to set it but it still took ages and it was like playing guitar. Ridiculous.

Interesting, so it doesn't reset it at all? What really is the point of it then, I wonder?

On other planes like the 777 or 747, we put the minimums “out of view” by scrolling them to less than -100. The 737 doesn’t do this, so pressing the Reset button blanks the minimums to declutter the PFD.

Thanks, I hadn't really thought of that. I still think "reset" is the wrong term though.

Well, are you sure RST stands for “Reset”?  Maybe it stands for “Restore” as in “…please restore my minimums value to my PFD as I am now in need of them.”

Absolutely not. Not sure at all 😆

It stands for "reset / set".

“Google Preview” of MentourPilot’s Facebook page on topic:

- The RST button is used to hide the set minimums value when it's not being used. The Minimums are set to the Minimum Flap Retraction Altitude (MFRA) during takeoff and the Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA) on a non-precision approach or the Decision Altitude (DA) on a precision approach like an ILS.Jul 21, 2020

When I fly into a high altitude airport I often cheat and use the radio altimeter.

In the 737, you can set BARO minimums (minimums set to the barometric altitude, which can be a really high value) and RADIO minimums (height above ground).

I think, setting radio minimums is really quick, 'cause for ILS and RNP approaches, decision height is almost always something between 50 and 300ft or so.

When flying visual approaches, you don't need to set minimums, 'cause you only continue approach if you continuously see the RWY you want to land on.

In the 737, you can turn knobs faster if you

1.) left click a knob

2.) hold left mouse and

3.) move the mouse to the left to decrease values or

4.) move the mouse to the right to increase values.

I use this technique to set BARO minimums (if i rarely need a high value) and to set frequencies on the radio panel.

8 1/3 kHz spacing can be a pita in that regard 😅
