Push your settings until the cap bounces between GPU and CPU

Hey all,

I am hoping this might be useful to some of you, though no doubt many of you figured this out already. My system is a 9700k, 32gb DDR4 and a 3070 (not TI) with an NVME drive and running on a 2560/1440p monitor.

 

Anyway, the sim runs beautifully for me 99% of the time in the Fenix 320 and the Cessna 310R, but I noticed some annoying stutter at times. I was permanently limited by the CPU in my dev mode, so I started upping GPU intense settings until the majority of the time the limiter was switching quickly between CPU and GPU limiting.

Whilst I was essentially trying to find the limit of graphics settings before I started to lose FPS, what happened as a side effect is the stuttering has totally gone! I have tested this for a few hours now. It seems to me, and I'm not sure why, that as soon as the GPU and CPU are roughly balanced, stutters are greatly diminished and everything is much smoother (and looks better!).

That's interesting - so was it the fact my GPU was sitting at idle frequently waiting for the cpu that caused that 'jittering' feeling? Just did another one hour flight and really pleased. Its totally gone! Seems counter intuitive that increasing graphics settings improves performance. Shows what I know!

YouTube channels such as Gamers Nexus always lower graphics settings to test new CPU's.  It does seem counter intuitive, but it is true - generally, as you will always get the odd exception.


Call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind, but I prefer Rob.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

I remember this helping me out a while ago. I used a guide but now I can't find it anywhere.

This and getting rid of snake oil/placebo tweaks really helped.

Interesting advice, but how does one do this given how dynamic the CPU and GPU loads seem to be in different modes of flight? The graphics settings needed to match CPU and GPU load would be very different sitting on the ramp at KELM, for example, vs. final approach at KJFK. Absent dynamic graphics settings, how does one do this?

Jupp, easiest way to do so is increasing render scale above 100. No other setting needed basically.

Here the tips in the practice for the right balance btwin CPU and GPU for a smooth experience in MSFS. 

- I use the DSR in nvcp (setting the right resolution for my system inside MSFS) instead of render scaling

-I start a flight with complex airplane (FBw/Fenix/PMDG.. Etc) in a complex scenery

And follow those tips...

I have been using this philosophy for a while now and keeping your GPU timing ahead or at least similar to the CPU timing using the developer mode fps window is key to smooth performance. 
I even ended up increasing my render scale slightly as my 3090 had some headroom. I typically run the refresh rate on my Sony X90K at 100Hz and in the sim have Vsync turned on at half refresh rate (50Hz)  then lock my fps to 50 using Riva Tuner. This gives me a virtually flat frame time graph which yields nice smooth results in around 90% of each flight. I did play around with Gsync on this TV but in HDR there was a bit too much Gsync flickering because the peak brightness of the TV is maxed out. 
The post you linked was the key in understanding and how to set the sim up to achieve the smoothest result for the hardware I’m running.

With the bonus that render scaling up around 120 -140 or higher improves the readability of cockpit text and gauges substantially.  Makes no noticeable difference to the scenery of course.

For me turning off Photogrammetry gives me a lot less stutters and improves performance slightly overall. I have mainly high settings with some on Ultra both LOD at 125 render scaling at 4K running a res of 4K, fps locked at 60fps with riva tuner amongst other settings in NV Control Panel replacing settings within MSFS.

I run a 4090 and 5800x3d. Still have some stutters. I’ve tried messing with the settings but it’s a powerful gpu so it’s hard to get the gpu on a level field with my cpu. I run dlss so I can’t use render scaling. For some reason recently taa has worse shimmering than dlss.
