the fastest CPU for MSFS has landed

Interesting to see how many of my fellow members of the i9-9900K gang have held off upgrading for the last 4-5 years, and are now convinced to do so by the latest AM5 releases.

I imagine most of us were waiting for the next big thing from Intel, but I guess AMD it is. 🙂

I'm in that club. I'm looking to upgrade this August. I haven't had an AMD chip in forever, but it looks like I'll have a AMD based system this year. I wonder how much things will change between now and then?

Its really hard waiting but I'll stick to my plan!

I admire your discipline. If you can wait til August, it's not much longer til the 8000x3D.

For those buying a 7800X3D or 7950X3D, what Mobo did you go with? 32 gig or 64 gig of ram, and what speed/CL did you choose?

My current plan:

ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-E Gaming WiFi AM5 ATX Motherboard

64 gig of G. Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000.

I decided to get a Strix X670E-E WiFi and 64GB of G.Skill Z5 CL30  (2x 32GB) to go with my 7950X3D.

I ordered a 7950X3D last Fri from PCByte and it arrived today. I see MWave & JW Computers also have them. They seem to be dripping in slowly 🙂

Ah interesting. I had one on pre-order with PCCasegear for ages and they told me end of April, was the same when I was checking MWave as well but you're right, I see they're now in stock. I'd swap over the 7900X3D for either the 7800X3D or 7950X3D if I thought it was going to make a tangible difference, but given MSFS is barely using the 6 3D Cache cores as it is, I can't really see adding two more is going to make any real difference.

What is very noticeable is how much difference the cache makes. Using Process Lasso to assign affinity to the 6 3D Cache cores gives a good 20-30% improvement in FPS at most airports.

Oh my gosh. You guys are killing me. I have to pay my taxes, tags, car times 4, insurances times 5 and you bring this up now. I'm so sad

I'll never be able to upgrade.😇

The AMD 7950XD3 reportedly runs much cooler than the Intel i9-13900K. That’s a major factor in its favour.

But that’s assuming you run any flight sim flat out. How big a difference would there be if you limited fps to 30 via VSync on a native 30Hz monitor?

The CPU would only work close to 100% at busy airports with lots of Ai. For the record my sim is P3Dv5.

Why on earth would you want to? I just don’t get it. This isn’t a classic car, it’s a modern sim. Yeah to each their own and all that, but progress has been made, embrace it.

Because that is my choice. Please don't question how I want to run the sim (P3D) of my choice. Plenty of people used 30Hz with VSync for the smoothest possible performance.

I have no need for 50+ fps. Other considerations are more important to me.

I have been doing some tests lately after switching to AM-5 and am getting around 40fps tops on cruise with the PMDG 747-8f, whereas on MSFS and (sometimes) XP12 I get triple digit FPS on similar scenarios.

I will re-test once I get my 7800X3D, but currently my 4090 is sitting at 35% Core Load, even though there is nothing major going on during cruise for such a significant CPU bottle neck.

Here is a pic showcasing FPS, GPU Load and PSXT (with 0 live air traffic):

P3D just cannot make use of modern hardware properly.

That is not a demanding area. Try a flight from EGLC to EGLL in whatever aircraft is capable of taking off from London City. Probably not a 747.

That is THE most demanding scenario I know of. I'd be interested in your findings with that short flight with setttings at maximum and minimum 150 Ai at Heathrow.

With the improvements made in v5.3HF2 P3D can share the workload pretty well certainly with the first three processors.

But that's the thing, even though the 7600X is not the best CPU out there, I am currently experiencing 85% CPU usage during cruise with no AI traffic around!

Not sure 7800X3D will be of much use on P3D, but once I get it sometime next week I will try a bunch of different scenarios on all 4 sims I have installed.

My PMDG737NGXu over Nth Carolina at FL400 is currently using 65-83% with 149 Ai in the bubble on an i7-8086K at 4.9Ghz.

The reason I'm favouring the AMD is it has fewer cores. I don't need the number the i9-13900K has.

wouldn't you agree that 30 fps is kind of wasteful, wouldn't 20 fps suffice and our planet could be a cooler place?

if you really prefer fewer cores, how about Intel Core-2-Duo-E7000. or you could easily enable/disable as many cores as you see fit in the BIOS and as multi core applications make gradually better use of them..

what we need is not fewer cores but Asobo making better use of the remaining cores. Yes, I know they chose to develop for multi core "not because it's easy but because it is hard. because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win."

That’s the whole point in a forum, to debate and question. Why make a statement if you don’t want people to question it?
