Track IR question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Apologies for what may be a simple question - I'm in my late 50's and a returning simmer.

I have googled and also been on Amazon about TrackIR and I get confused - a load of ads seem to be selling anything from £100 to £500.

I'd really appreciate if someone can point me to the "definitive TrackIR" package.

Thanks & apologies - not very technically up to speed

Have you checked out their site?  https://www.trackir.com/

It may also depend on the Sim you want to use it on!

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

I use TrackIR5 without pro Clip, the simple reflection clip on hat works fine for me, the range is somewhat limited but with proper placing (I made a small rack to place it with some angle on my hat) it can cover what I need.

Get the one on amazon for $100 or so. I doesn't have the track clip pro just the baseball cap reflective attachment. I've been using TrackIR or well over a decade and came to the conclusion that the track clip pro is a hindrance and a gimmick. If you can and especially if you are using a large screen position the camera behind your head on a tripod and wear the baseball cap backwards for the best experience. You need to do a good bit of fiddling with your setting to get it right but man oh man once you do it's unbeatable. Once you get it and if you end up placing the camera about a foot behind your head at eye level PM me and I'll send you my flight sim profile. That will save you a lot of time!😁

Get a Tobii eye tracker, the track IR is old Technology. I used a Track IR for over 10 years I got a Tobii about 9 months ago and never looked back.

Interesting, I've never heard of the Tobii eye tracker, I did trial some freewear eyetracking some years ago but found wearing glasses and also looking down at the keyboard tended to make it loose the track, something that doesn't occur with Track IR.

Cheers

If you're in the UK then you're going to have a problem getting hold of a new Track Ir unit from Natural Point.

There is no UK dealer at the moment and Amazon is full of adds for Chinese made copies. How good these are I cannot say.

I can't speak to the Tobii eye tracker but despite TrackIR being around for a long time I'm not sure you can do with eye tracking what you can do with TrackIR5. Put the camera behind you for a start unless you have have eye's in the back of your head. I know my wife does!🤣 Like TrackIR the camera either goes at the bottom or on top of the screen which can be a problem with large screens. But with TrackIR  you can put the camera behind you at eye level. If you put it in front of you at eye level it would be right in the centre of the screen.🤣. With a properly tuned profile and the camera placed behind you, you can accomplish this level of freedom of movement on a large screen. Mine is a 55" Samsung 4KTV. I also use the TVs Judder Reduction setting to double my on screen FPS the Video is taken at 30fps and there are some video processing stutters at the beginning but unless you're watching on a TV with frame interpolation you'll probably see panning judders that I don't see. Anyway, I think this demonstrates practically the same freedom of movement as is normally associated with VR except this is TrackIR5:

Apple to Orange I would say, I like face/head tracker more because I can look to the right and still have glimpse on left side UI/Panel, or my small monitor for pop-out panel

I wear glasses and have no problem with Tobii eye tracker, also you don't need to wear the IR clip or cap like with track ir.  Difference is like night or day anyone that says otherwise has not used Tobii
