Positive thread & TIPS for Dx10/SP2

Featured Replies

Yes you almost have to be an IT person or Vista tech.I wonder does anyone get higher than mid to high 20 frame rates with most sliders maxed out, including AI traffic, but not GA or cars etc.CheersPhil

I've been reading the full thread and I see I'm not the only one deceived with FSX DX10.What I don't understand is all the information that we got before releasing Acceleration Pack saying that DX10 will improve performance about 30% with same setup.Anyone that tryed to mark the DX10 Preview chackbox can see is a total disaster. My experience with Acceleration pack is good and bad. I really love the new missions and planes. I wanted an helicopter like the Merlin and the detail is amazing as the rest of the planes and sceneries that come on the pack. But the graphic improvements and performance promised by SP2 for me are false. Turning on DX10 I got a 30-40% less performance with same settings. Cockpit shadows looks jaggy and horrible on many planes and new water is not as different as previous one. I have lots of flickering textures on taxiways. VC tooltips disapeared on DX10.So my solution is to stay with DX9, forget about DX10 and enjoy the new missions, planes and sceneries of the Pack.Although I have a good knowledge of computers and been working as IT creew for many years I don't want to spend hours trying to fix what doesn't work. I have enought at the office. :)

Dreamboy, maybe you'd like to try this driver, though it's a Beta one.For me it is a winner, performance and stutters wise

Hi David,I likewise cannot get Vista to allow DEP to not check fsx to recognise fsx. How did you get it to work? Also I noticed something interesting andf wonder if anybody has tried a new power supply. We had a power cut and my back up power supply kicked in. But FSX did exactly the same as it does when it CTD. It so happens my son's power supply has just gone so I am thinking about putting my 600W in his and putting a larger one in.What are people's comments regarding this. I'm running a dual core and 8800GTXregardsNeville

Hi David, only way I could get it to work, was have FSX in default directory. As the SDK path is set.Anyway problem solved.

>Hi David, only way I could get it to work, was have FSX in>default directory. As the SDK path is set.>>Anyway problem solved.>Good news!I have read a lot of times that with Vista it's better to have FSX in the same partition than the OS so you won't loose anything having both on the same HD :--)

Hi guys, Well I'm 2 hours into flight with DX10!!! So that's progress.Since my last success with Dx 9 and PMDG and failure with Dx10 I have made the following changes to get (so far) success.I updated Visual Basic to the lastest, Net frameware to the latest and put on 169.12. I likewise could not install 169.02 but managed to get 169.12 installed by using the clean boot with msconfig.I also used registry mechanic to clean my registry.I cannot get nhancer going anymore even with a reinstall so have used nvidia control centre to do what you recommended David, and made sure that I had antialias and filtering off in FSX.And I used full screen as you recommended David.BUT....I paused during the night and have noted a serious degradation in frame rate from mid 20's down to mid 10's.NOW So I could read this forum and write this I changed to windowed modeAND frame rates are mid 30's!!!The question is what mode do you have it in David?I have noticed I can nearly guarantee when it is going to CTD because the frame rate drops to around 9-14 fps for a round 2-3 minutes.regardsNeville:-jumpy

>Hi Neville,>1) PSU is very important nowadays with powerful hardware>components so don't hesitate to put a strong one in your>machine (I use a 900W PSU but please don't tell Al Gore!!)Does the power supply always run at 900W or does it use as much power as the computer requires?>2) the only way to disable DEP for FSX is indeed to disable it>completly from Vista's security features.>Please, do it at your own risk and understand that I don't>push you to do it.>Here is what you need to do :>1) open a command prompt (start> CMD> right click on>CMD.exe>run as administrator)>2) copy this line and press enter, you will get an "successful>operation" message:>bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff>BEWARE! copy and paste this line because spaces are important>and it should be exactly as written here.>>If you want to cancel this operation, just replace Off with>ON:>bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOnThis won't affect the other command I made to bcdedit that you recommended previously?>>Have a nice week end>DavidSame to you David, but we are nearly out of the weekend on this side of the world!RegardsNeville

Even better, I have gained around a 30% in fps in DX10, and the taxiways stops flashing. But the position lights in the aircraft are still missing.

Neville,I run FSX in full screen. because i like it that way and also because I get better results. So far I had 1 screen freeze but no CTD with this driver after maybe 10 hours flying in DX10 preview. Not bad, huh? :--).Some more remarks...I've noticed than launching the sim immediatly after a reboot really helps. Also, if I want to change the livery of an airplane when launching a saved flight (I fly essentially LDS767 and PMDG747) I do it, save the flight with the new livery, shut down and relaunch FSX and select the new flight. That sounds crazy but that's not a placebo effect!!

I think it's amust to run in full window mode, otherwise frame rates drop 50% or so.Hey David, I tried using 169.12 beta driver, but cannot say it made any difference to WQL version 163.75No gain in frame rates or performance.Interesting though. No noticed if taxi ways lines etc are still flickering. Have to check that out

That is my main problem, no position lights. Interesting enough they are there during plane startup.Put yourself in spot view and hit Ctr-E, during the startup the lights will appear in all it's glory, but near the startup end they will disappear.Jos

So after all this discussion on HOW......What is the bottom line benefit of DX10 and using Windows Vista?? We know all about the Blogs and their hype. Time to put hype aside..How much sharper is the scenery, AC panels, etc...??What about FPS? How much has it improved? Benchmark threads please!I purchased Vista and I am ready to upgrade my video card, but I can't justify the $ until I know there is the return on investment. So far, I haven't heard any WOW factor/comments.I have a Dual Core AMD 5600 2 GB RAM (which I am going to upgrade to 4 GB w/ Vista). I have posted a thread previous and people just recommended to stay the course until more "Vista/FSX/DX10" research and development and testing is done. Thanks!Barry

I have made a deeper test and the flashing taxiways still appears in some airports. However the increased performance in my case is noticeable
