MSFS 2020 Monitor: 120hz or 220hz?

Recommended Posts

Community,

Is it worth another $400 to get a 220hz (49" Odyssey OLED G9 240Hz) versus 120hz (49" Odyssey CRG9 DQHD 120Hz)?

Coming Soon PC Specs

  • Processor: Intel Core i9-14900K (6 GHz Turbo) (32-Thread) (24-Core) 3.0 GHz (14th Gen)
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero (Wi-Fi) (Z790) (Up to 3x PCI-E) (No SLI) (DDR5)
  • System Memory: 128GB DDR5 4800MHz Kingston FURY Beast
  • Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce RTX 4090 24GB (VR Ready)
  • Power Supply: 1500W Corsair HX1500i

With a 4090 you should be looking at a 4K display. The G9 is only 1440 vertical pixels. 4K is 50% more at 2160.

Ask yourself if you can get 120fps with either display. Unlikely and is it required outside of VR?

If you have the space consider this LG with a 75Hz display.

LG 40" 40WP95CP-W 5120x2160 NANO IPS 72Hz 5ms FreeSync Curved Widescreen Gaming Monitor.

I don’t think the refresh rate will be very noticeable. HOWEVER - the newer G9 is also OLED which is very noticeable in terms of display quality - better blacks, more contrast, better HDR range - and just a superior display technology overall. That’s probably worth the $400 and the refresh rate is just a bonus.

There are a bunch of good OLED panels out now from LG and Samsung - so you might also be able to find one on sale. Great time to buy a new monitor - good luck!

I don't think the refresh rate is an issue, as none of the sims can reliably crank out frames at 120Hz anyway.

I am more focused on variable refresh rate and display tech.  I have opted against OLED displays for the time being, as I have serious concerns about how current-technology OLED panels experience image quality degradation over time.  As a result, when looking to upgrade my MSFS/XPlane machine a few months ago, I decided to go with the Alienware AW3821DW 38 inch, 3840x1600 (21:9) display, which is an IPS LED panel with hardware G-Sync Ultimate.  I use a 55-inch 4K TV for my primary (P3D) sim system, and if I could find a large-format 4K display with hardware G-Sync, I'd be all over it.

I have a 55 Inch Sony X90K which is natively 120Hz, I run the TV at 100Hz with GSYNC on and then Low Latency - Ultra & VSYNC - On on NVCP. I cap my fps to 80 using RTSS and the result is so smooth it is incredible. I even run the sim in TAA with a render scale of 110 and my 4090 still has headroom.

I really do not see the benefit of going above 120Hz, I did a lot of testing when I got my TV & 4090 last year and with the latest drivers and the awesome AutoFPS app the sim is the most fluid I have ever seen. I went with this model as I know Sony TV's have very good motion processing and GSYNC works beautifully.

I personally would choose a decent 4K TV over a monitor any day.

You can get a 4K 48inch OLED TV 120hz that will not break the bank under £900 in the UK.

PS Samsung use LG manufactured OLED TV Panels but don`t tell anyone it`s a secret.

My new desktop monitor will be an LG OLED 42inch EVO C3 TV

Would be interested to hear what you think about your upcoming 42inch evo.   I'm currently using a 49 LG-C1 Oled (2020) as a monitor,  I just watch tv and some light work,  Its great but its too big though.  So I'm deffo gonna downsize into a smaller oled TV when i get myself new pc.

It was late arriving Monday instead of Saturday, spent the day setting it up, the 4K 42inch in OLED is amazing the colours just pop out of the screen. retired my 28inch ASUS 4K LED monitor to my grandson. As well as flight sim I am into gaming, racing sims and FP shooters on steam, the response time at 120hz is great. Plus, I just installed a few weeks ago an MSI 4080 SUPER GPU. The latest racing sims run at 4K ULTRA no problem. In game mode it runs in G-sync and VRR and full HDR.

It`s the max size I can fit in my PC room just over 3.5ft from the screen, and just switch over to the TV for sky sports and F1 racing. And I have Game Pass for PC.
