Because of the way it was coded to work with TLOD Base Extra when used with the altitude schedule from Auto TLOD it was based upon, and I agree it is somewhat strange.

The good news is that the latest 0.4.6.8 test version, which you can get from here, now allows you to configure FPS Sensitivity mode to work with an FPS Cap like FPS Cap mode does, which does not have this TLOD Top oddity, so I suggest you give it a try as I could use the feedback on it to determine whether I remove FPS Cap altogether if it is better.

To set it up the equivalent of FPS Cap mode, sans TLOD Top multiplier, just switch to FPS Sensitivity mode and either select Fixed and set your target FPS to your system-set FPS cap if your FPS is pretty much fixed at it or select Manual and set your target FPS at least 1 FPS lower than your system-set FPS cap if it used more as a limit than a fixed value. eg. (set to Fixed)

BTW, if you are not a fan of staying on test versions (although this one is now pretty solid), it is simple to revert to 0.4.5.7 by just checking then unchecking the + Tests upgrade option available when you first start the app, which it offer you a prompt to revert to the latest formal release.

Any feedback on this would be appreciated.

I've been using this app for a long time now and it's just flawless so thank you.

I finally installed MSFS2024 last week and started flying with it and this app works very well with it. What I like the most is how the built-in frame limiter and the dynamic settings frame limiter work with the app's FPS cap. Since I still use MSFS2020 as well, I must ask: is there any way in MSFS2020 to natively hard limit the FPS of the sim just like MSFS2024 does to ensure stutter free stable frames at like 40 for example?  Maybe a line of code inside a cfg file or something?

I find this to be the best thing about 2024 in terms of performance.

Thanks!

Obviously, with my little knowledge and true understanding of this essential app I noticed in the above example that the TLOD Base MIn of 50 x the EXTRA (x2) = 100. TLOD Top Max is 200. I thought it had to equal TLOD Top Max? Just a bit confused, following the previous version instructions 😉

I agree that the MSFS 2024 Dynamic Settings and Max Frame Rate set to the same target FPS as in FPS Cap (shortly the be available in FPS Sensitivity mode too in 0.4.6.8) is an excellent combination. I use it this way in 2D and VR and get very good results.

Re setting an FPS cap in MSFS 2020, the only internal option is to enable Vsync and hope that the full, half or one third setting produces the resultant FPS that you are seeking. If not, which is pretty likely, then you need to set it elsewhere. The simplest way is via nVidia Control panel if you have an nVidia GPU, under Manage 3D Settings, Program Settings, MSFS 2020 and then set Max Frame Rate to what you want. For AMD you can set it under Gaming, Graphics, Frame Rate Target Control. You can also use universal apps like MSI Afterburner, and even though it is a bit trickier to configure, it gives a very consisistent resultant frame rate.

In previous versions (to 0.4.6.8) TLOD Base x Extra could be set to equal TLOD Top Max, but it certainly wasn't a requirement and you will find the default settings were not, as I have set them in the screenshot you reference eg Base 50, Multiplier 2, Top 200. The only hard requirement was that Base x Mult could not exceed Top, eg. you could not have 150 x 2 > 200, and the app will auto correct if you try this.

In 0.4.5.8-test, which you are welcome to test and provide feedback on, you will now have three options for TLOD Base Extra:

  • Fixed: TLOD Base stays at the system‑set fixed value. This is the equivalent of Extra being unchecked in previous versions.
  • Extra: Additional TLOD Base applied under good performance conditions, controlled by the multiplier. This is the same as in previous versions and, as just mentioned, the multiplier is valid as long as TLOD Base x Multiplier <= TLOD Top.
  • Free: TLOD may range between Min and Max depending on performance conditions, regardless of altitude and flight phase. This new mode hides the multiplier, as it is auto calculated internally to produce the full TLOD range, and blanks out altitudes as they are irrelevant in this mode.

I gotcha, sorry, I needlessly conflated the issue. I have been using 150 x 2 EXTRA and my TLOD Top Max is 300. Thanks again.

No worries. I have safety checks in place so you can't set it wrong anyway, so if it hasn't been pinging you then it is set within allowable limits.

Free option give me less stutters than extra

Maybe settings weren't not the best before this last version.

I wait now to land at Zurich and wish have the best approach as possible

Thanks for your great work

Thank you for the feedback. I have been using the Free option myself quite a bit this week in MSFS 2024 and I am seeing the same improvements in smoothness that you described, even during departures and arrivals where earlier versions of the app did not allow TLOD changes. MSFS 2024 is noticeably more tolerant of TLOD adjustments than 2020, so it is good to have FreeTLOD available as an option now.

While I appreciate your feedback, I had hoped to receive more input from others regarding both FreeTLOD and the new Fixed Target FPS option for FPS Sensitivity and Tolerance modes. Without broader feedback, I will need to rely mainly on my own testing when finalising the release, which may not fully reflect what users prefer.

Some users have asked about donating to support the app, and I always decline because I do this for my enjoyment of flight simulation and the challenge of developing the tool. The one thing I do value, though, is feedback when I ask for it. So if you are someone who finds the app helpful, providing feedback, like @grandfred29has here, is the best way to contribute.

Hello,
As requested, here is my humble feedback.

Last year I upgraded to MSFS 2024 SU4.

My profile:

Fly: gate-to-gate or parking-to-parking.

Aircrafts: general aviation (Baron 58 Pro and Caravan Black Square, etc.) and airliners (A320 Fenix, 738 PMDG, etc.)
FPS: 40 FPS via the Nvidia control panel (the goal is twofold: silence and moderate temperature in the office).

MSFS settings: TLOD = 200, OLOD = 150

With my configuration (see signature) and only with airliners, I experienced stuttering on final approach (from around 400 ft AGL) and while taxiing at major airports like EGLL (IniScene) or EDFF (Aerosoft), which made the immersion disappointing, especially since it occurred after 1.5 hours of flight, precisely when I was trying my hardest to finish in style.

I tested AutoFPS, and with the settings infra, I no longer encountered stuttering.

For me, it's a real plus. Many thanks for your work.

Hello.

I also want to share my experiences with current latest beta (.11). I have MSFS2024 beta version 1.7.21.

I set it up with FPS sensitivity, fixed FG with free mode (TLOD between 70-150).

I had one of my stutter free flight. It was really nice experience to see the difference between my previous setup, FPS Cap.

I still had some stutters, especially when panning, but this is well known and reported issue with MSFS.

I would recommend everyone to try FPS sensitivity with free mode.

I want to say big thank you to Reset XPDR to create that super tool and keep developing it.

Question on settings, I am running FPS lock of 40 internally and then apply 3x FG. I have tried to select “NFR” to 40 fps so that autofps looks to optimise against the base FPS (as that’s the one I try to keep stable), but the NFR box turns yellow an keep resetting to FG (for which I assume I can’t use 40 fps to optimise against). What’s the recommended setting for this case?
Would like to try the free setting but never been able to have smooth panning at TLOD > 100 on the ground with Tobii head tracking despite top end system..

Best regards,

Alexander Rietveld

Suddenly, when I open AutoFPS, I see the icon display in the task bar, then it suddenly closes. The sim is up. I have never had this problem before.

Can you help me with this?

I tried reinstalling it and it came up fine once and now when I try to start it nothing happens.

This is so weird, I have never had this problem before.
