I just had a gorgeous flight from KJFK to KEWR, going over Central Park and heading south over Manhattan to to connect with the visual approach to runway 29 at KEWR.

One thing I noticed is that as soon as I loaded in (using FPS Tolerance, which I do prefer over FPS Sensitivity), the TLOD started increasing because I had not started PSXT. Since it takes a while for PSXT to load up and search all that it searches before starting to inject traffic, the TLOD had risen a fair bit (from 100 to 505) before the FPS drain of traffic being injected caused it to come back down.

I don't think anything negative about AutoFPS about that - it quickly started correcting the TLOD to get the FPS under control and the whole time traffic was climbing and new planes were being injected, the TLOD was stabilizing, exactly as hoped for and expected. Once the traffic stabilized, so did the TLOD/FPS. Perfect performance as it allowed me to take off at a higher TLOD (>200) than I would have if I had been using IFR mode (my IFR TlOD Min is 100 for places like NYC). As I wasn't trying to hammer the system, but rather fly out in a normal flight, I was very impressed.

As I flew over Manhattan at about 3000 AGL, my TLOD never dropped below 500 and I had no stutters. By the time I joined up the short visual final to runway 29 at KEWR, my TLOD was down to 373 (due to my setting the FPS target about halfway between my max and my min desired FPS for my system - which I have internally decided on at 70 and 40 respectively). By the time I landed, the TLOD was still above 300.

Everything performed exactly as hoped for. I would go as far as to say, like butter. Very impressed and definitely loving the return of FPS Tolerance along with the easy switch to IFR if I think it will be a really problematic scenery. This last experience has me thinking I'll use VFR with FPS Tolerance more frequently unless I'm landing at a very complex scenery (my KEWR is the sim default). Landing, as @Cpt_Piett has pointed out, is the trickiest time for the VFR options.

Note, this was with 4.2.5-test. @Reset XPDR, I tried alternatinng between FPS Tolerance and FPS Sensitityv with this latest version as well as the one I had used last night and FPS Sensitivity worked as you expected it. It did not raise the TLOD on the ground. It left it wherever it was, even if FPS Tolerance had already increased it above the default value, it just stayed at that value unlt taking off.

Yes, I have noted that previously. It's what I call my vicious cycle of FPS drop/TLOD change/Stutter all reinforcing each other and causing the cycle to repeat. It's why I think FPS Tolerance does a better job, because it makes less frequent adjustments to the TLOD.

That's a good point, being able to switch between them. Doing that, though, would be better if VFR to IFR switching took the currently active TLOD level as a starting point, rather than starting at the TLOD Min value. I mentioned this some pages back, and I think it's currently intended to start from TLOD Min and work its way up.

After looking at the video even more closely, I’ll almost be so bold as to conclude that the problematic phase is only from AGL 500ft to 50ft on approach, and 50ft to 500ft on departure. Outside of that, everything is fine.

During these problematic phases, not only do nasty frame time spikes occur, but also FPS falls well below target.

Most discussion in this topic relates mainly to resolving stutters being experienced with the released 0.4.2 version. The test version I have created relates directly to that and just happens to include a few minor enhancements with it, which I have summarised here just one page ago:

I am still seeing a lot of testing of VFR mode in IFR-like situations and with huge TLOD ranges being discussed, which of course is going to stress and break it. VFR mode, as I have made it, is intended to be used when you are well away from complex scenery areas in your little Cessna 172 or maybe a Kodiak 100 out around some regional airports or sparsely populated mountainous scenery.  Please keep that in mind when testing it out.

You know me. I just want to test the limits to see what works and not 🙂 No harm intended. During my recent fly-ins to relatively low-density areas (LFBZ, LEBB, LESO), I chose IFR mode before the approach. Works great. 

I added this to the video description:

EDIT: Having been on quite the round trip around Europe, flying into Heathrow, Schiphol, Brussels, and now en route Orly (all payware airports), I've learned some lessons which I think others can benefit from as well. 

I have a high-end system. Currently flying in IFR expert mode w/ AI traffic. On approach into all these airports (very high-dense scenery), my hardware couldn't cope with my target FPS. In fact it fell well below, despite AutoFPS reducing all settings to minimum (TLOD 50, clouds medium). 

It's just worth noting. These are some of the most demanding locations in the sim. These situations are heavily CPU-limited as the mainthread can't keep up with the GPU frame times. So for those that want the best visual quality when flying into these areas often - having a top of the line CPU is a necessity. Having a FG-capable GPU certainly helps, but as I've mentioned before, it won't save the day when native FPS falls below 30. 

Also, I read a lot of complaints about "molten", "post-apocalyptic" PG-buildings. This is IMO unavoidable if one wants to fly into the mega-hubs with reasonable FPS. Can't have your cake etc. Of course sometime PG goes molten as the connection to MSFS servers is too bad.

I tried the test version and when i load the took and MSFS simconnect and session are red. It was working in previous versions of this tool. Most likely cause? User error.

Nothing has changed in the simconnect and session code for weeks. Sometimes the connections glitch like this and you just need to restart the app and/or MSFS to get it working.

All's quiet on the Western front here today so either testers have given up in disgust 😄 or 0.4.2.5-test is performing acceptably. I'm going to assume the latter, so in preparation for formal release I have updated the readme file with the few additions and changes this release will make to 0.4.2. I have tagged them as (v0.4.2.5) so if someone can take a quick look at them by searching through the readme here for that tag and tell me if I have explained things well enough, I would much appreciate it.

I have also made the second section of the readme an official FAQ and I have added the following question which I am getting frequently as it turns out 😁:

I am getting major stuttering, freezes or CTDs in MSFS using this app. What can I do to stop them?

  • By far the most common reason is users have enabled expert settings and have modified the default settings to be way beyond what their system is capable of, even without running the app.
  • As such, the first step to resolve is to restore the app's default settings, which you can do by using the installer to uninstall (remove option) and reinstall, which will recreate your config file.
  • Rerun the app and try non-expert mode with IFR flight type and Auto Target FPS checked.
  • If this doesn't resolve it, try enabling expert options and reducing the FPS Sensitivity setting to 2, to allow smaller TLOD changes.
  • (v0.4.2.5) If still not resolved, try the FPS Tolerance mode, which was the automation method in the original release version that had larger TLOD changes but they occurred less often, with a setting of 5.
  • Finally, if still not resolved, raise an issue here on github and I will do my best to help you, provided you have completed all of the aforementioned steps first.

All good on my end! Couldn’t break 0.4.2.5 either, and now 7 or 8 of your Leo’s are staring at me from my desktop, probably thinking: “just give up the torture tests and be happy flying!”. Just completed a grand tour of Europe visiting lots of major hubs as well as some smaller ones. The build is robust, you win 😅

BTW, I was going to leave this release as is, but I do have a reset settings to default button idea on my wishlist that I could implement if people think it would be a much better method than having the user searching for the config file to delete. Let me know what you think.

0.4.2.5-test is working very well. I think you have taken so much input and tweaked so many things that there are myriad options that will make someone's experience be what they want.

MSFS unfortunately has so many permutations of variables that affect the system load (scenery type, PG, weather, time of day, aircraft, etc.) and everyone's system is so different, that the only way for people to use the "Easy button" would be for you to have a default configuration (I do like the loading defaults option) that will work with 99% of situations because it's so mild in terms of boosting performance.

You have given us the rope, and some, like Cpt_Piett and myself have chosen to use it to its fullest extent by pushing our systems more than they should be. The brilliance of the app is that it has different levels of automation (Auto FPS, FPS Sensitivity and FPS Tolerance) as well as so many useful settings in the Expert panel, that all you have to do is play around with it in your system and situation. I really like the addition as well of the VFR/IFR configuration settings differentiation, as I find that I sometimes needed to remember to switch some parameters when alternating between the modes.

I think you've done a great job with the readme, but you also know people don't usually RTFM...

So far, app is working great for me, I flew 3 flights yesterday and it's having a great impact. Was flying the CRJ, and saw occasional stutters (hung for 5s or so) - unsure if this was due to changing LODs or just the *sigh* CRJ

Did run into what I think was this app causing a hang loading MSFS twice today though. Once on loading the airplane, which I figured was probably just the airplane, and then when I restarted it froze twice while loading the main menu. The second time, once I exited AutoFPS, it took about 5 seconds to start loading again after being hung for about 10 mins. 

May be a one-off and it's certainly not something I've tried to replicate yet since it just happened but thought I would report
