MSFS 2020 Auto FPS App v0.4.2

Hit the nail on the head.

After my first positive impressions with AutoFPS, I started noticing frame time & stuttering issues. I played with all of the settings to try to mitigate the negative effects but with no avail. Then tried DynamicLOD which honestly give me better results and I find it more straightforward to use.

I have been using auto FPS almost since day one. I had a few hours of stuttering one day, and found out it was a server issue with MSFS rather than the  app. Since then, not one stutter, and it works perfectly. I can fly the Fenix now with decent FPS, which I couldn't do before Auto FPS.

I have just formally released AutoFPS version 0.4.2.10. You can read about it and download it here. In summary, it is a minor update to 0.4.2 that provides new options to address stuttering issue

As some users have requested, I've added a slightly darker background variant to the 0.4.2.10 release page, the direct link for which is here. The two versions are otherwise identical. A side-by-

For a while after AutoFPS appeared, I was switching between it and DynLOD. For the last weeks I’ve been using AutoFPS exclusively as I find it way more user-friendly as well as flexible enough in expert mode. It basically handles everything in the background, no need to set custom altitude TLODs. It’s just my 5 cents though, YMMV as always.

Fair point. Already up to 20 pages. The other one reached 70 or so I think. I put it down to how popular this app is, and how many people are testing it.

Yes, love the app.

I have done the complete journey with AutoFPs, DLSS, FrameGenMod.  However, last night I remembered when I ran completely smoothly at 30fps with stable frame times, without the downsides of FG, which includes non smooth frame times.  So I just removed FG, set Rivertuner & AutoFps to 30fps, and set DLSS/Quality.  The result to my senses is a smoother experience at 30fps than 60fps with FG & its drawbacks.  Graphics are sharp and I really can't see any difference in smoothness.

I'm not suggesting FG is bad in any way,  but on my system I see no benefit to using it if smoothness is the goal.

This makes 100% sense. I'm currently in the process of recording a video with target FPS at 65 (to get as high TLODs as possible), which is just above the limit for FG to work properly. Below 60 and it's not very useful. Well for me, I should add.

If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest using RTSS' FPS lock in front edge sync. For me at least it's a bit smoother than async.

It's possible with limited hardware (lime mine) that I may revert back to DynamicLOD but I will tell you......I've been getting stutter fests and pauses as well. Ask Cpt Piett, he even helped Dark Helmet regarding some of this. I had no mods, apps, traffic, autofps etc running. Asobo/MS/Azure etc need to get their **** together with their servers and these stupid bugs. Otherwise, when MSFS works, autofps works flawlessly. The app just helps reduce the stutters but sometimes these are so bad nothing can help. Hoping SU15 will reduce all of these issues.

I'll reinstall AutoFPS and see if I can figure it out better this time around!

I have setup AutoFPS in a similar manner, RivaTuner = 43; Target FPS = 40; Clouds = ULTRA; MSFS TLOD = 200 \ OLOD = 100; At High Alt.  (eg. 34,000) TLOD around 400-500 range I get a solid 40-43 FPS (NOT using "Auto Target FPS"). If I do use "Auto Target FPS" it's a little lower at arounf 38 FPS. So I'm thinking my sweet spot is RivaTuner = 43 with a "Target FPS" = 40 (NO "Auto Target FPS").

Some hours ago I did an airliner flight in a primarily remote area, like I mentioned in one of my above posts. This worked much better than I had anticipated. High TLODs really help to bring out the natural beauty of such locations, with very detailed terrain textures as well as mesh resolution.

This was done in expert VFR mode with TLOD min 50, max 975 with a target FPS of 65. Looking at the log, max TLOD was 705, min 480.

Things look promising re: SU15. I haven't really been following the official forum for a while, but initially the impressions were really good. Also, SU15 seems very stable.

Can I ask the group for advice on an annoying and somewhat intermittent issue I have with main thread spikes and FPS drops in the cruise? I use the AutoFPS app and it’s fantastic, payware airports and Fenix/PMDG totally smooth and climb out is amazing, I have the TLOD limited to 400 and it hits it quickly after take off and maintains very consistent smooth 40 FPS/80 with FG even in cloud all the way up past FL300. But then a weird thing starts higher up in cruise where lag spikes start, changing camera views make it spike/stutter really badly and even in steady view every few seconds there’s a 10-20 FPS drop. It gets better when I descend below FL300 and back to solid “green” on the MSFS FPS counter.

Can anyone explain why performance would suffer at higher altitude? Drawing more scenery since more is visible higher up? Or some other system issue?

I ran several tests yesterday (LOWW-EDDK routing to keep it consistent) using Fenix and PMDG and eliminating all other add-ons (FSUIPC, RealTurb, GSX, etc) and the issue presented every time. Even turning off clouds didn’t help, normally that would be totally smooth high FPS in cruise.

This is indeed very strange, as we would expect performance to be worse closer to ground when more stuff has to be rendered. Another person just reported the same issue in the other AutoFPS thread.

hmmm something is going wrong with mine i have set target auto fps no expert mode.

ive also lowered setting to high is msfs yet during climb and ground is fine.

once cruising i get fps drops stutters. etc dont know why?

Btw I always get slight stutters and FPS drops whenever I pan quickly or change views. It's no worse in cruise vs on ground though.

Thanks for the video. Looks like FPS is intermittently dropping briefly from 40 to below 25 as mainthread frame times spike. For this to happen something must be putting a load on the mainthread.

If AutoFPS did not change TLOD significantly at the time, it's very unlikely it's causing this.

I wish I could check if this also happens at my end, but every time I exit out of dev mode, MSFS crashes with a GPU error message...

I have tried different settings, DLSS Quality (DX12), TAA, DLAA, FG on/off, also in AutoFPS and so on, there are spikes from the Main Thread when the stutters occur.

I think the most crucial thing to do in order to determine whether AutoFPS has anything to do with this is to test w/ AutoFPS on and off.

I often use the freeware tool CapFrameX to examine stutter issues in detail. It won't tell the cause of stutters, but it gives me an idea when they occur (e.g. ground, climb, cruise etc).

As AutoFPS can be shut down and re-started mid-flight, it should be very possible to do a CapFrameX capture and compare the results. I just did so at FL300 (FPS RTSS-locked at 65), and despite the massive frame time spike when I shut down AutoFPS, the frame times are consistent (flat line). I highly recommend doing this for those who experience stutters - in order to eliminate whether AutoFPS is a contributing factor.

An easier method is to download MSI Afterburner and enable the frame time graph in the on-screen display. In the below screenshot I've got FPS locked at 65, currently at cruise FL350. Notice the line is pretty much flat (AutoFPS on). Frame time variability is the best measure of stutters. Very low FTV ("flat line") = almost stutter-free.

I do not think is the AutoFPS, though the Main Thread is connected with the TLOD, most probably.

But try to run a scenario, for example DLSS Quality, AutoFPS ON with Expert Settings default and Frame Gen ON and OFF and watch the Display FPS from the Developer Mode. Also in AutoFPS I think I have noticed FG on and off sometimes.

At some point the Main Thread was pretty OK, no spikes, switched FG to ON, spikes appeared, switch to OFF, spikes continued...

TLOD heavily affects main thread, absolutely. This becomes very obvious when trying to land at Heathrow with a TLOD much higher than the CPU (main thread) can handle. The mainthread will be hammered, and there will be massive stutters. The worse scenarios is in PG-cities as PG is a "mainthread-killer". Up at cruise, we should be able to run much higher TLODs without any issues.

So what you're saying is that you get stutters (main thread frame time spikes) with FG on vs off? Not sure if I understand. Could it have something to do with the frame gen mod? Have you tried comparing AutoFPS on vs off?
