CTD on loading. Stumped.

Featured Replies

After nearly 4 years of mostly no problems with MSFS, I'm getting CTD's on loading screen. Tonight, after a few weeks of not being able to fly, I was finally able to set some time apart. I was really excited to download the new WU 17. I did so and did a quick and awesome flight around London. No problems at all. I then decided I wanted to actually do a proper planned flight. Most times, I'll restart the sim between flights, however when I went to get started again, I got a CTD on loading. I tried restarting Windows. No dice. I usually run in administrator mode, so I tried to start it regularly, still -- no dice.

I feel like I've been super lucky throughout the years with MSFS. I guess my luck has finally run out.

My specs are
i7 11700K
RTX 3800 10 GB
32G RAM

If anyone has any experience with this issue and has a solve, It'd be super helpful to hear how you fixed the issue. I've looked around this forum and have seen a lot of people with hung loadings, but not CTD's on loading. If it helps at all, progress bar gets about 3/4 of the way before it just drops dead. It's just so weird that everything was working fine and after one restart, the thing refuses to open.

Thanks in advance.

Your specs are not an issue. The most often test for this issue has been to totally empty out the Community folder.  Not challenging to accomplish if you use Addons linker but also easy to accomplish and later recover contents with a simple copy/paste to a different location followed by deleting the folder contents.  If that gains you entry into MSFS without CTD then you slowly add back addons until you identify any possible culprit.  Your most recent addons/additions including new updated versions of addons, or systems changes (driver updates, etc) should get your most immediate focus.  Do that before you follow the usual impending recommendations to reinstall the simulator or start over by reinstalling Windows.  You were successfully flying?  What recently changed?

no need to empty out the community folder  just need  to rename  it  msfs  will make  another  one  on start up, if  msfs  starts   than  the op will know  its  one  of  the  add ons  in his  community folder.

Probably won't help but msfs hangs for me last few days if I try to start it full screen mode. In windowed mode, it won't start if the window fills the screen. I have to drag the window small, then it starts every time. Alt Enter toggles windowed or full screen.

Definitely need to try safe mode / renaming the community folder as mentioned, then move in addons in chunks at a time, sounds like an addon might be failing consistency check during initial load.

Just interested if you have used Oculus VR & have OpenXR Toolkit installed?
