In LOVE with the Chinook :-)

I recently couldn't resist the temptation of buying the DCS World version, but there's at least a good payware version for XP12 too, that might well become my next purchase 🙂

Maybe it's a skill issue, but this bird give me tons of PIO in pitch and some in roll, very hard to control....

Oh 😞

thx for pointing that out

I'm just using it in DCS World anyway...

I've had it since release in v11 and have enjoyed it.

There's a good review over at helisimmer.com by an IRL Chinook pilot AMD he rated it highly in v11.

IMHO the flight model is good and seems representative (tho I'm far from an expert).

I do think the new v12 flight model might not be quite as good as it was in v11. Nothing major, except some minor weirdness on final just before touchdown, i.e. at low speed and very low altitude.

If you like flying it in DCSW you should like it in XP, too.

It's an analog cockpit, tho, unlike in DCSW.

Also noticed that both rear gear are steerable in XP, whereas DCS has it as just the right one with left being free caster.

The DCS one models it correctly as per RL.

I definitely had to put in a custom joystick profile for this one. Not uncommon with helos...

I flew it again last night and took off to chase the USS Ford aircraft carrier to practice Deck Landing Quals. I took on a full load of fuel to ensure the bird had some weight to her 😉

It was somewhat more difficult than I remember to maintain smooth speed transitions while coming alongside the carrier in preparation for the lateral move & descent to deck.

That's probably my lack of practice with this bird, but it was a bit disconcerting. Again, I'm not sure if that's due to the substantial changes in the rotary wing flight model in XP v12, or just my bad piloting 🙂

Flew back ashore and was able to perform an amateurish landing at home base.

FWIW, I went back out in the Ubben SA 315, which is my main helo, and was able to get aboard the Ford without issue. Still, I attribute that to most probably being my lack of familiarity with the Chinook, and the vast size, mass, momentum and inertia differences between the two.

I will probably crank up the Chinook in DCSW tonight and fly the same mission profile and see how that goes.

In DCS I am yet to successfully end a sling load mission 😞

This with the SAS enabled !!!

Well, I took it out for DLQs in DCSW and I have to say that it seemed relatively easier in DCSW.

Still not sure how much of that is me and how much is the addon & sim.

Are you trying in VR?

Nope 😞

I had my EDTracker Pro parked for more than 1 yr ... Plugged it back and together with Opentrack and was able, as best as I could, to emulate 3 DOFs... Not bad but far from ideal...

Now I am on hold... Should I buy TIR 5 ?

VR is out of question for me.

I think yes, I got VR but I still fly airliners mostly with TIR5.

Before that I use Wii remote based Freetrack, it works nicely, but headache to maintain all the batteries and wires(for on-head LED).
