Low and slow - Munich to Salzburg...

Featured Replies

MSFS World Update 18 improved and re-introduced the imagery for 3 countries: Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It has included TIN (whatever that means...🙂...) method-based surface modelling of several cities, and also a few hand-crafted airports two of which are Germany’s Munich Airport (EDDM) and Austria’s Salzburg Airport (LOWS).

So, today, after a quick and prompt installation of the Update, I wished to take a low and slow trip...from Munich (EDDM) south to the border-city of Salzburg (LOWS), but the trip actually ended up being slow and high instead for parts of it...🙂...when the beckoning of the Bavarian Alps mountains became irresistible to this mountain-lover. Since a long time ago, when Orbx had created "Germany South" for FSX, I have been somewhat familiar with this part of Germany, of course, in my own (imaginary) virtual world...🙂...One of the significant natural features of this region is this so-called Bavarian Alps, which is part of the Alps Mountain range, and spread along the German-Austrian border, and then continues east across the border into Austria.

For this flight, here, I have departed directly south from Munich over and past the short-lived plains of about 30 miles until the mountains stopped me on my tracks, and then I ventured deep into and above the heart of the (majestic) Bavarian Alps. While atop these peaks, and about 60 miles away from Salzburg, I've activated the trusted [Dir-To] function on the GPS of this a/c, beginning my descent straight towards the Approach Fixes for (LOWS) ILS Runway 15 (see my VFR Map overlay), with the city of Salzburg located just barely across the border.

The DHC-2 Beaver gave me solid and faithful company, from start-to-finish, on this short but exciting adventure, and I must also say, the (MSFS) imagery of these plains and these mountains are some of the finest I've seen in the SIM (or in Xbox...🙂...) ...see e.g., the images in my shot #s (7-10). Approaching into the city of Salzburg and landing on this airport, which I'd done umpteen times in my (past) FSX days, also felt so remarkably and refreshingly different this time...with prettily dotted buildings and houses on the ground below my a/c path. Turning for the final right over the Salzach River (see screenshot of my VFR MAP and the river below my a/c), I've finally touched down (safely) onto the tarmac at Salzburg airport...with the Austrian Alps looming over the near horizon, just to the north of this airport and this city.

Welcome to Salzburg, the city of Mozart...and the locale of the musical "The Sound of Music"...🙂...

Thanks for viewing and hope you enjoy...!

Lovely screenshots!

I visited LOWS Salzburg for the first time ever in a flight simulator just a week ago (after purchasing the RD Presets version of the airport). I had always wanted to fly there (because it was the destination of my first ever real world flight back in May 1993), but I have never had a good quality version of the airport until now.

Bill, Sorry for late response...and thank you for chiming in. I'll send you some more information via PM... but basically, I've headed south from EDDM about 80 miles into/over the Bavarian Alps, and then activated the (GPS) Procedure to LOWS ILS 15 Runway...15,000 ft altitude will keep you safe from the highest of the Alps around here...🙂...

Yes, John, both the mountains and the flatlands of WU 18 looked good...Of course, there was some metamorphosis ...🙂...of the mountain structures as I flew nearer to them, but the textures resolved well enough...

Thanks for chiming in, Christopher...And good bit of reminiscence. Not sure why but I'm reminded of that Baby Boeing 736 now...🙂...I think there is no greater devotee of the 737-600 than you, around here...🙂...Cheers...!
