64 GB RAM ?

I did 4 tests with exactly the same settings, as well as active applications:

  1. Fenix ILS approach into KLAX
  2. Fenix ILS approach into EGLL

I was surprised by the findings, to be honest!

In both tests, average FPS as well as avg. 1% and 0.1% lows were significantly higher with 64GB. In addition, the frame time variance was significantly better with 64GB, indicating that the sim ran smoother.

MSFS as well as total RAM usage was also higher with 64GB.

And based on the new video posted in this thread, this applies to MSFS 2024, too.

  • Especially with DDR5 and AMD, there’s an advantage with 2 sticks vs 4. Basically with 4 sticks it might be hard to run at the same speed and timings. In extreme cases there could be instability issues

  • No one is actually claiming huge improvements.  Most of us are suggesting incremental improvements we weren't expecting adding to overall RAM consumption and MSFS RAM consumption and noticed less micr

Welcome to the club!!  I was just as surprised and saw the exact same results...

Edit:  Incidentally, I have always had a noticeable stutter, almost pause as I get the 10 callout right before touchdown at KEWR.  Makes for some VERY rough landings lol.  Since moving to 64 it is butter smooth the entire time.  No pauses at all!  It is the best sim experience I have had to date.

I think the MSFS2024 Alpha video gives us a clue to what is going on here. The panning in 64GB was significantly improved over 32 GB. I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet but, recall that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will feature multi-core CPU utilisation and as such will now be able to leverage multiple CPU threads, leading to improved performance. In the MSFS2024 Alpha video above, you can see all the logical processors working during the pan and they all reach 99 to 100%. The 32GB rig uses all the cores too but takes that much longer to get to that maximum level of utilisation and only then does it run smooth.

So even where all cores are being thoroughly utilised, 32GB in MSFS 2024 Alpha stills gives delayed/and or choppy video until it catches up.  So why is that?

I suspect it is because the Memory Manager is being slow at releasing what is required by the processor especially in the heavier demand from the new multi core threads. It's not that Memory Manager is at fault here but rather, it has a lot of  housekeeping to do in 32GB and only about 10-15GB (mostly cached) to deal with all the manipulations for all applications and services including the OS. In contrast, 64GB gives a lot of headroom and some real 'Free' memory that can allow Memory Manager to feed data to the multi core processors quickly. At least that is my take on it.

I don't think 64GB will do much for MSFS2020 since it is not employing multi-core utilisation, but any extra headroom that allows data to be more readily available in 'Standby' cache and/or to move faster to the CPU by avoiding Hard fault paging, can't be bad. As @Noel suggested, it may be as simple as adding some smoothness to MSFS 2020 sim. But for MS2024 there are a number of new features which collectively will place more pressure on available memory. It looks like multi-core utilisation will definitely improve performance and I think 64GB will be needed to feed those multi-cores demands if we are to get the best out of these new features.

No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.

Ahh yes. My standard line to my wife when asking about new hardware. “Oh that. I’ve always had that”
