You're able to switch things off in dev mode options (Debug → Aircraft → Covers and Chocks) ...I'm not in reach of the sim rig right now, so someone might chime in with a screenshot...

As I'm not running 2024 yet, I'm following this with interest - I certainly will enjoy it the first couple of times (for the novelty) but it certainly doesn't sound like it really (at this point) has much validity in preparing for my simulated flight.  I will certainly want the option to start from the cockpit.  I normally start cold and dark, as I want to run through the operational procedures (and they actually accomplish something).

In my flying days my walk-around included (among other items):

• Inspecting the tires
• Inspecting the control surface hinges
• Checking for leaking fluids
• Draining fuel
• Checking engine oil
• Inspecting the prop for nicks and other damage
• Checking the air intake for birds' nests

I'm guessing that the 2024 walk-around includes none of this...

Correct. It's just a stupid clickfest.

It's completely useless. Why can't I say "Fly" and the next thing I am in the cockpit! Why do I have to first confirm and then press Shift+X here to enter cockpit. SOOOOO useless!

I sure do. And when they make it good, I'll be happy to do it again. Until then, I'm annoyed I have to shuffle through it before I get to the good bits.

Cool, then make it a realistic walkaround. One of the most important parts of a walkaround is sumping the fuel. Why? Because you worked on the ailerons maybe at the last annual. You added new fuel 3 days ago. The aileron's probably fine. You check it anyway because you're not dumb, but odds are one in a million you'll find anything wrong with it. The fuel, on the other hand, could be the wrong fuel, could have water in it, other contaminants, etc, and if you don't sump that fuel every time you take a real risk of crashing.

So why can't we sump the fuel in this all-important sim walkaround? Makes no sense.

That's actually one of the  other problems with the walkaround. I sim in VR. I have a yoke and throttle quadrant. The walkaround means I also have to fumble around for the mouse and keyboard before I can even start the plane.

If it were a really *good* walkaround I might be tempted to switch over to the VR treadmill and actually *walk* around the plane, which would be awesome. Then deploy the seat on the treadmill and go flying. But it's not, so I can't be bothered.

It includes "inspecting" (clicking on) the tires, and hinges. That's it from your list. Actually I think you might be able to check the oil in a plane or two, but I never do because like I said above, nothing matters when everything on the plane is 100% guaranteed to be in perfect condition all the time.

And even if they do implement things to actually find on the walkaround, it's not really clear what you're supposed to do about it since there isn't a staffed FBO or maintenance shop to bring the plane to to change a tire or whatever.

 

I'm hoping Asobo allows us the option to start in the cockpit with the preflight already done by the time I am ready to do airliner flights in 2024. I really don't want to have to find an alternative way to achieve it.

Perfect! Thanks. It should be an option in the sim but using debug mode is a whole lot easier than the faff of a clickfest.

Here's how it looks in the sim once debug is enabled for Covers & Chocks - it's just one click to remove them all from the comfort of the cockpit!  🙂

The Commance has a much better walk around mode if you choose. It includes many more vital items like fuel sumping, oil check, etc. . If MSFS had this system it might be more tolerable. It should still be an option...seems obvious.
