Move P3D from HDD to SSD?

Featured Replies

My P3Dv4.5 is currently installed on an HDD. However, it's now taking for ever to load it and start a new scenario, so I now want to move it from the HDD to an empty SSD - would really appreciate an word not allowed's Guide on how to do this,

Many thanks if anyone can help,

Don McIntyre.

The least painful is to do a direct transfer of your existing HDD to an external drive. Buy a SSD bigger than your existing HDD. Double if affordable. You’ll also need some temporary external storage at least as big as your current HDD.

Download AOMEI Backupper and make an exact copy of your HDD using Disk Copy.  Store it on the external storage. External USB3 drives are reasonably cheap.

Install the new SSD and copy the contents of the backup onto the SSD.

Remove the old HDD.

Bootup and go into the BIOS and make your new SSD the primary drive if it isn’t already.

Exit the BIOS and your computer should bootup on the SSD and all should be well and a lot faster.

The alternative of adding an additional SSD and copying P3D to the new drive involves scores of Registry edits and is not recommended.

You don't say if you have anything else on the HDD other than P3D.

Assuming this HDD is NOT your C drive and only contains P3D then it is very easy......Say this HDD is your drive D.

Then attach and mount your new SSD and copy the TOTAL contents of drive D to your new SSD.

You may wish to use any disk copy program of your choice to do this.

When copied, assign a different letter ( you can use windows "Disk Management" ) to your old HDD say Z , and assign your SSD to whatever letter your HDD had. In this example it was D.

Assuming all went well, windows will see P3D where it always was ie. Drive D.

Reboot and all should work as before.

Very reliable program.

Intel i7 6700K @4.3. 32gb Gskill 3200 RAM. Z170x Gigabyte m/b. 28" LG HD monitor. Win 10 Home. 500g Samsung 960 as Windows home. 1 Gb Mushkin SSD for P3D. GTX 1080 8gb.

Migrate any drive including your C drive, using a remote housing. then swap out the drive.

No one has mentioned a total REINSTALL of P3d (perhaps the superior 5.4).  I know it's painful, takes time, and is mentally sad in a lot of ways.  However, the result, I believe, will be a faster, smoother, wonderfully intact P3d that could be worth the effort.

Just my opinion.

I don't think it is painful. I had to do one just a few weeks ago after my SSD with Windows crashed. All done and dusted in a couple of hours.

Given @donbrindles hasn’t logged in since 28 November or responded to any suggestions I’m wondering if he’s given up on the idea.

One can hope he got it working and is too busy enjoying a sim that is fast to load and doesn't require updates every day to reply to us 🤔😉

I do fnd it disappointing when someone asks for help and then doesn't return to acknowledge the suggestions. There might be a genuine reason of course.

I'm tempted to respond to the other bit of your post but I'm too busy enjoying my flight from Singapore to Sydney. 😁

Yes. My friend is flying on Saturday to see her son in Sydney. Three day stay in Singapore before the onward trip. A350 to Singapore and A380 to Sydney. It's an overnight flight but I'm doing it in daytime. Just crossed the Australia coast.

Well chaps, apologies - and to Ray Proudfoot in particular, you are all quite right, and I now thank you all for your advice, which has enabled me to switch P3D from HDD to SSD. It now loads P3D and Scenarios much faster. Only problem now, can't open - now empty - HDD, although Speccy tells me it's there! 🤔,

Don.
