Or a chip implanted on your brain so you will never be disconnected from the world!

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I'm actually reading a multi-volume saga of an Earthling who traveled to the stars in his Homemade Spaceship. I won't dive into the weeds on the details, but one of the horrors he encounters is a group of aliens who have over the centuries kidnapped humans and other alien beings, "chipped" their minds and destroyed their personalities. They then used them to perform mundane AI tasks such as operating heavy equipment, factories, and so forth.

In this universe, I suppose anything is possible. I did miswrite "AI" in my comment. The actual reason for "chipping" sentient beings illegally is because no one in the galaxy trusted artificial intelligence! Apparently, they had already endured a millennium long year war against AI entities.

This of course was also true in the "Dune" saga, so creation of AI was similarly forbidden.
