Simbrief & BeyondATC

I am really interested in this software, but it is frustrating that I would not be able to use it with manually constructed flightplans, and preset weather. I prefer to fly in calm weather at all times, so the Live Weather prerequisite is a bit of an obstacle. I will have to think about it, and maybe even have a look at Simbrief to see what it can do. I do not doubt that it can create complex flightplans, but can it handle simple circuits at airports with user defined waypoints?

What you describe is VFR I think?. This will come at a later point in development.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

  • Been using Flight Sim ATC programs and was even a beta tester for a few of them. BATC is the best I have ever used. Wouldn't fly without it.

  • No, BATC is never off. If it gives you a runway with tailwind, it's because that's what the airport ops dictate (e.g. preferential runways, you can read that in the Navigraph / LIDO charts for example

  • Tell that to American, Delta and JetBlue!😁

I'm going to say that he probably wants to practice IFR procedures in VFR conditions. Therefore, I don't see why he can't just go to airports that are forecasting VFR conditions. It can be done and I would not be surprised if it can be done with a weather theme. I don't think that most BATC users know that they can depart VFR, then pick up their IFR clearance in the air. I've already done it multiple times.

If the user doesn't know the difference between VFR & IFR rules, than it doesn't really matter. There is a learning curve.

BATC only works with real time life weather. It can't read the weather in the sim.

I use it with Active Sky without any problems.

Me too, but MSFS to depict the live weather and AS for added effects.

It's been confirmed at Discord that "live" weather is a requirement for BATC.

That's possible but then you are either only using AS for added effects to MSFS live weather or you are seeing AS weather while BATC is using live weather. BATC can't technically 'work' with AS (as in: it does what it is supposed to do) but BATC can not read or use AS generated weather.

Whilst I think that's correct, it's a user answering the question (denoted by the colour). We'll need to hear from the devs on what the plan is, I believe they were looking into historic weather support as that is quite important for MSFS24 anyway.

They are planning on adding historical weather, indeed. Whakamolenz confirmed this to me. He even said it‘s a „smaller project“, so it shouldn‘t take too long. No ETA yet though, so don‘t quote me on that

They have a surprise coming up for the supporters... maybe this is it? (Let the speculation begin, haha!)

I'm quite excited what it'll be! Hoping for something juicy like preview of CoreATC 1.5 (shortcuts, holds, speed control on approach) or CPDLC but who knows...

I guess I haven’t played with 2024s live weather much yet.  Is it possible to have the sim weather decoupled from what time of day is depicted?  I normally only get time to fly late at night.

Afaik 2024 comes with one day of historic weather so if you fly at night (like I also usually do) and set the sim time to noon, you will be flying with daylight and afaik the weather from noon. Works like a charm. Don't know what happens if you set the date to somewhere far away in the past... I do know though that BATC only reads live weather from another source so things might be different in your sim than what BATC is working with. Never got me into problems though...

Yep, and I like that feature, but it could cause some of the issues noted earlier in the threads about BATC such as “Wrong” runways being used, etc.   was just wondering if you can force the sim to only use current weather regardless of time.

Just thinking out loud: I suppose that if you set the date back to more than 1 day in the past the 'automatic' history option won't do anything anymore and you will have live weather from there on. So on tuesday set the sim date to for instance last friday and you should be good to go. Or you could also choose tuesday a week ago: in that case BATC will also gove you tuesday's traffic (from February 2024). Might be worth testing this a bit.

Does that actually work or will it then just apply the weather for the specific time to the previous day? In other words - I set the time in '24 to 0900Z today, I get 0900Z today. If I now set it to 0900Z on 15-Dec, do I then get the current weather again or do I still get 0900Z weather from today because it's date agnostic and just looks a the time?
