Less Sensitive Surge Protector

Featured Replies

I have an PC surge protector my PC and monitor are plugged into. Probably 1 out every 30 flights my surge protector will trip causing me to shut everything down. This mostly with MSFS 2024 but sometimes 2020 as well. I have the sensitivity down as far as it will go. Do anyone have a surge protector that is good but not quite as sensitive? Thanks.

I had the same problem but it was not tripping, just alarming. I did some research and even exchanged my just bought UPS for a more robust one.  It too alarmed but far less frequently.  What was alarming?  The surge protector?  No, it was the battery backup seeing the large wattage traveling through its veins during certain portions of MSFS 2024.  For me it was the loading screen.  How did I fix my alarms?  I DONT use the battery backup, just the surge protector.  My UPS has two sets of receptacles.  One marked battery, the other not.  See if yours is similar and try unplugging from a battery powered plug and using the surge side.  It worked for me and it might for you too.  YMMV and TANSTAAFL. Good luck,

-B

If the surge protector is tripping due to the load from the PC, there is something wrong . I have never had a surge protector trip, unless the power went out..

I would not trust that surge protector, not over my PC/Monitor anyways if you have some spare money get rid of it and replace it. Maybe helpful to tell what brand/quality the SP is.

Hi,

I'm using the Schneider Electric / APC surge arrester series on all my high-value equipment (PC, heat pump, TV/Hifi). Here in Europe, these are reasonable priced and i have no issues with them (but I never had to put to the test neither...).

Great suggestion. I do have battery and non battery, I will switch and see what happens.

It is a APC BVN. It is virtually brand new.

I have always used APC both at home and we use them at work. Never an issue.

Yeah, this is my second one and I do like them except for this matter. Hopefully your suggestion will work. Thank you.

My situation was similar. Went from an APC 600VA/300W,  constant alarming.  Immediate return and replaced with Amazon Basics 1550 VA/550W, seldom alarms but still occasionally.  I decided I could invest close to $300.00 to get an APC with adequate battery backup VA/W OR I could just use the surge protector as I don’t need high availability and I don’t use my PC in inclement WX.  The choice is always yours.

YMMV. TANSTAAFL -B

OK, so what you have is an uninterruptable power supply (UPS), not a surge protector.  And more than the UPS series (BVN) it's important to know the rated power delivery is in both VA and watts.

What is most likely happening is your computer is exceeding the rated power delivery of the UPS, and the circuit protection is kicking in.  This is not an issue of voltage "sensitivity"--the UPS will trip when it experiences a current overload, as it is designed to do.  If that's the case, you need a UPS with a higher load rating.

MSFS 2024, in particular, can heavily load your GPU, and many modern GPUs can draw in the neighborhood of 300-400W by themselves when loaded up.  The APC BVN650 is only rated at 350W, so if that's the UPS you're using, and you have an nVidia 3000 or 4000-series GPU, it's not too a far stretch at all to draw enough power to overload the UPS.

Thanks for the information Bob. By the text of my post, you can tell I am no electrical Engineer. All I can say though is that it bills itself as a surge protector and the outlets are labeled as "Surge Protected Outlets".

Post your system specs CPU, GPU and power supply that can help with some problems.

It does that, but that is not it's main purpose.  If the UPS is designed for 800 watts, and you hook 1200 watts of load into it, it will trip off.

Sorry Bob, I was responding to Bob Scott who said it is "Not a surge Protector".
