Hello everyone,

After installing P3d and FS9 i wanted to go back to FSX.

I still have the OG FSX but decided to go for FSX:SE.

A couple of questions if i may...

1) Should i go for the tweaks like the old times in OG FSX (HIGHMEMFIX,Bufferpools,AffinityMask etc etc) in FSX:SE?

2) Do i need to tweak (again like the old times) Nvidia Inspector?

3) Should i go for DX10 or not?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

1) HIGHMEMFIX? No. Buffer pools? I never dealt with that. Affinity mask? It depends on your CPU. Mine is a 5700X3D with SMT disabled, so I don't need that.

2) Yes. If you remember, there was the FSX Bible, by the late NickN. I recommend you to study it.

3) Unlike others, I got better results with DX9, even after installing DX10 Fixer. Before you consider DX10, I think the Fixer is no longer available for sale.

But honestly, the only reason I installed FSX in my current rig is to fly the planes I don't have in P3Dv5 (including the HJG beauties).

Main rig: self built, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (with SMT off and CO -50 mV), 2x16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, Nvidia RTX3060 Ti 8GB, 256 GB M.2 SSD (OS+apps) + 2x1 TB SATA III SSD (sims) + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (storage), ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS air cooler, Viewsonic VX2458-MHD 1920x1080@120 Hz (G-sync compatible, but disabled), Windows 11 (at last!). Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020 and even FS9. On the fence for MSFS2024.

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there for airliner ops. FSX-SE also installed, just in case. Lossless Scaling in al my rigs. What a godsend...

FSX Steam Edition already has the cfg tweaks baked into it, so no need to mess around with a bunch of tweaks.  DX10?  Maybe if you have Steve's DX10 Fixer, but if you don't, and it's no longer available for purchase, stick with DX9.

First of all, thanks a lot for your answers! Really appreciate it!

So, i decided to stick with DX9.

However, i will try to play a bit with BP=0 and the ForceWindowedVSync=1 settings to see what it can do. Because if i remember correctly this specific combo had amazing smoothness.

I will also go for the tweaks in the Nvidia Profile Inspector as per Kostas Guide!

Thanks again,

cheers

A 3080ti, but I have been using these settings for years.

Hi,

I always advise anyone installing or reinstalling FSX to download the Avsim FSX Configuration guide and follow every step of the advice given in that to the letter! The advice is very sound and you should end up with a nicely functional FSX.

Ok, so after a couple of days i have to say i managed to balance at the best of abilities FSX:Steam Ed.

Here is what i learned:

1) HIGHMEMFIX tweak is hardcoded, so no need for it.

2) AffinityMask. As i use Active Sky 16 and it asks for it so i decided to use it.

3) Bufferpools i really did not mess with it, maybe i will in the next days.

4) I lowered texture resolution from 4096 to 2048. So, from 4k to 2k. Makes difference if you use payware sceneries/aircrafts etc.

5) Texture_bandwidth_mult from 160 to 40.

6) Also, i kinda played a bit with sliders in graphics settings inside FSX and toned some of them slighty down.

7) I applied almost all the Nvidia Profile Inspector tweaks from Kostas. I left FPS to unlimited. Now, out of the box FSX:SE is not looking half bad, but with Kostas tweaks looks even better.

😎 If you want to monitor VAS in real time with FSUIPC (free version) go to FSUIPC->Logging. Type on the first square "024C" and select "U32" on the square next to it. Now, on the bottom side, check "Window" option. The VAS remaining will now be visible on the upper left corner of FSX. THIS WORKS ONLY with FSX in windowed mode.

So in conclusion i made a test:

With Aerosoft Airbus, Vpilot, ActiveSky16, Orbx products, Rex TD with Soft Clouds, Aerosoft LFPG, Chaseplane i get 30-35fps on ground and during taxi and take off. VAS remaining is about 1.5GB.

That is all i have to say. Hope it helps some of you. Cheers thanks for the time reading it.

My Specs:

i5-9600k

Nvidia 2070 rtx

16GB RAM

If you got some spare GPU power, here is the ultimate tweak: lock your FPS to the highest value you're sure you'll reach, and then get and apply Lossless Scaling FG. I've used it successfully for everything between FS9 and MSFS2024.

You need a very stable framerate first, and that's what Avsim's, Kostas and NickN setup guides will help you reach. Then make sure your GPU is not fully utilized. At 30-30 FPS, I'm sure your 2070 has some spare power available. What resolution is your monitor, @A3 610?

EDIT: I saw in another thread that you fly in 1080p. The 2070 will be good for FSX+LSFG.
