KBJC - Rocky Mountain Metropolitan - from Propair

Featured Replies

I see that Orbx and Simmarket are now selling a version of KBJC (Rocky Mountain Metropolitan - nee Jeffco Airport) from a developer called Propair.  They appear to have done a handful of airports, but none I've ever tried so I'm not familiar with these folks at all.  Anyone have any familiarity with any of their work?

Jeffco (as it was known then) is an airport I've flow into many times IRL.  When I purchased my '79 Turbo Arrow IV, a flight school there was the only one anywhere remotely local to me which offered a Turbo Arrow for training, and I had to get at least 10 hours of dual for Avemco to insure me, so I spent special time there flying a Turbo Arrow III with an instructor before I completed the purchase.  Lots of good memories, so definitely interested in this one.

I used to live an work near KBJC so glad to see it is available.  We would walk to the FBO for a great lunch.

Not too far from KDEN.

I would have luved to fly into the old SGU.

Overall the texture quality is very nice.  In 2024 though, the vram is pegged on my RTX 4080 the moment I get close to this airport (or start there).  I've asked the developers about this and they are looking into it.  It could be related to the special photogrammetry that exists near the Denver area, PG tens to saturate vram as well.  Not sure how it is in 2020.

There's also what I'd call a showstopper:  You can't park under the arch at Sheltair...  if you taxi up to it you hit an invisible wall.  And if you slew there (sacrilege! lol) your plane will go on top of it hehe.

They also don't use FAA windsocks (which is really bugging me these days - it occurs with a lot of devs - they just use the default orange and white assets.)  And I see double windsocks in a few places.

But the airport is well modeled and it's a beautiful area to fly in and out of - and BJC is such a heavy GA/bizjet airport - I was happy to buy it.  I just hope it can be optimized a little and the sheltair thing fixed.  The windsocks aren't a huge deal.

(This reminds me I took a bunch of screenshots and haven't posted them in the ss forum yet but I will...here's two for now!)

***  One more edit.  I would LOVE to see someone with a RTX 5090 try this airport in 2024.  I'd love to see how much vram it uses.... that card has twice what my 4080 has... but I never would have thought 16GB would be too little.

This is as close as I can get to the arch hehe

I have been to JeffCo in real life...that is where I saw a 737-200 decked out as a private jet, this was just a few years ago...was pretty cool and not one you see often these days.

I would like to be able to go under that arch, hopefully they can allow that with their model there.

Funny thing about KSGU.  Based on the Orbx description which starts: "Saint George Municipal Airport was a public airport in Saint George, serving southern Utah, until 13 January 2011.", I believed this to be the old airport so I never took much of a look at it.  Now that I have, I can clearly see that it's the new one.  I've no idea why they have this confusing preamble.

Thanks for getting me to take a second look.  And it does look very nice.

Thanks much for the detailed info Ryan.  The issues with windsocks and the Sheltair arch are certainly of concern.  Gotta admit, the first thing I would've done on landing would've been to taxi to park under the arch for the VIP treatment!  The VRAM usage is also a concern.  I'm still on 2020 but moving ever closer to making the move to '24 so definitely looking at any '24 issues for new purchases.

That said, it still looks nice and is an airport which has always been high on my wish list so I'll probably take a chance.  Hopefully they'll work at addressing some of the issues you've identified.

Thanks again!

Ah, who am I kidding.  Deep down I knew I had to have it no matter what.  Purchased via Orbx.

BTW, the Paypal problems I and others have reported with Orbx appear to persist.  Different error but still no joy using Paypal.  Minor grrr.

I live just a few miles from KBJC and will purchase this airport a little later today.  My 4090 has 24Gb.  Much less VRAM in use in 2024 than just a few months back, and I'm in SU2.  I see more RAM in use now, and less VRAM.  I leave PG off most of the time.

OK, it's installed and VRAM hit 15.6Gb or so initially, then during taxi down to around 13Gb.

Did my first flight out of KBJC in the Grand Duke this afternoon running 2020.  Some random observations.  First off, this airport demands memory even in MSFS 2020.  I only have 8GB of VRAM on my older card (which is the main reason I stick with a 1080 display) and it was using 7.9 GB of it.  When the airport first loaded in, I was getting some pretty heavy stuttering, but I waitied a bit before doing anything and it settled down nicely so my performance was adequate.  (Not a frame rate counter, so no idea there.  If it's smooth, I'm happy.)  I also noted that my system RAM (32GB) usage was at about 95%.  I've never seen that before with MSFS.  By comparison, when I landed VRAM was at about 50% and system RAM about 29%.  Of course, I was at tiny KGNT - Grants, NM.

The biggest anomaly other than those already noted was ATC related.  The ATIS surprisingly said "Jeffco Airport information..." which is no longer correct, but put a bit of a smile on my face for old times sake.  However, monitoring ground and tower frequencies, both were referencing "Detroit Metro".  That did NOT put a smile on my face.  I don't actually use MSFS ATC, but I do monitor the correct frequencies at each stage of flight just to keep my procedures correct and hearing "Detroit" was jarring.

Otherwise it seems to be a well done airport.  It's been a few years since I've been there and the aforementioned Sheltair FBO was not there at that time so that's new to me, but things looked much as I remembered.  I'll have a more detailed look over time, but so far I'm satisfied but echo hopes that some of the glitches get ironed out.

KBJC is a great alternative to KDEN for starting a GA western trip.

(I'll have to pay the Pilatus factory a visit next time - at the far northwest end of the field) - I had just watched the Steveo video where he flies the PC12 PRO from BJC to OSH this July.
