Seems there's a bit of a heatwave!

30c here in Jersey. Windows open but still baking. It's been a record, apparently.

Walked to the shop at 7 this morning to avoid skin getting toasty. UV is high here.

Yes, yes... I know you Americans laugh at such temps but no aircon here.

Mr. Weathertron will know why...

Temps have been quite mild in my neck of the woods this month with highs 26-29C.  We'll hit 32-33C next week, but, well, it's summer and we're at 36 degs. latitude, so pretty normal.

We're not used to it, Dave. 😄 it's like when Americans from hotter states visit the UK in the winter and are shivering but we think it's not too chilly at all.

No air-conditioning except in shops.

Most cope quite okay, despite our houses being designed to keep us warm rather than cool.

Reminds of one summer up in Bar Harbor, Maine.  It was getting up to ~30c/85f during the day and the resident Mainers were dropping like flies.  Just not used to it.  On the way home to NJ it was 105f just outside of NYC.  I remember they closed the Long Island Freeway because it was buckling in the heat.  The next four days here are 98f, 102f, 102f and 100f.  Too much!

That's 39 isn't it? 40.3 is UK's hottest, in recorded history anyway. 37.9 the record, where I am, in Jersey. That's the Jersey your New Jersey was named after. 👍

Yes, 102f/39c is ungodly hot.  Not normal at all for this part of the country.  Plus you get the high humidity that goes along with it, YUCK!  Your island of Jersey looks beautiful.  One of the beautiful things about this forum is you get people from around the world, not just the US.  BTW, I didn't vote for him if you catch my drift😉

Yet to explore. Have been on Guernsey for 5 years. Last time I visited Jersey was 50 years ago. 🤔

World Famous zoo of course, shall definitely take a look at that. My daughter's still in Guernsey till next week, working and finishing off the packing and final phase of the move over. She nips between the two islands on a regular basis for work, so she's more familiar than me.

My cat was very stressed on the way over, well behaved but the poor boys heart was pounding. Now he's here he's not been eating. Today i managed to get him to eat some food out of my hand and some Dreamies, so that's progress.  Me and the cat both find such things stressful and get homesick. 🙄

Well, you may not be used to it, but the UK has had multiple unusual heat waves in the past.  Heat waves do happen on occasion.

Most Americans are used to cold Winters, especially in the northern part of the U.S. where the Winters are more akin to Scotland.  Even in Tennessee our Winters are quite cold, sometimes with lows of -15C and averaging about -5C in January and February.

Take a gander:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_heat_waves

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1540_European_drought

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1757_heatwave

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1808_United_Kingdom_heatwave

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_United_Kingdom_heatwave

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_British_Isles_heatwave

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_United_Kingdom_heatwave

There have been more recent heatwaves that supposedly beat the record, but we're talking about beating it by 1 or 2 degrees, technically and on paper worse than in the past, but with the same uncomfortable effects.  We also cannot know with precision what the temperatures were hundreds of years ago, as proxy data can only provide an estimate and range of temperatures.

Anyway, people in the southern part of the UK might want to invest in an air conditioner, that is, if they can afford the electricity to run one.

I know, Dave, I was there for 62 years. 😃

Physiological adaption to high temps takes greater frequency that the UK's occasional heatwaves.

I know why you posted those dates going back to the 1500's, though. I realize the point you were trying to raise, the one you've frequently raised before when heatwaves are mentioned, and in that case, regarding that phenomenon, in a warming world (defined as a long term global average temp increase) more frequent and longer lasting heat waves can be expected.

Now we must cease, or Charlie will once again do an impression of a steam engine by emitting hot gasses from  every bodily orifice.    😏

The most interesting thing about controversial subjects is not that they are controversial, but why they are controversial.

This is decidedly NOT to start a conversation about why subjects are controversial, which would be very controversial in itself, but to get people thinking about the subject.

Officially 101f/38.3c here.  Thank God the humidity is only 30%.  Just not used to it here in New Jersey.  Of course our all black Shepsky with the Husky double coat loves to sun herself in this weather.  I let her do it for 3 or 4 minutes and bring her back in.  I don't know, is she Bat 💩 Crazy?

Here's a link to a list of record temperatures in the USA by State going back to the late 1800s:  https://www.accuracyproject.org/recordtemps.html

Most of the record high temperatures occurred in the 1930 during the heat wave and resulting Dust Bowl of that period.  Some occurred near the turn of the 20th century, and a few are more recent.

I find it helps to put things like this in perspective and realize that it has happened before.
