Crossing the Channel

Featured Replies

Louis Blériot crossed the English Channel on July 25, 1909 with his Blériot XI. He started in Calais and landed near Dover. It took him 36 minutes and 30 seconds to cover the distance of around 35 kilometers.

I took off from Les Deux Caps, a small airfield southwest of Calais.

Very nice pics - with a history lesson too!

The first person view gives some idea of what it must have been like. Cold sea below, a tiny engine, flimsy airframe, fingers crossed...and the relief when land appears.

I wish Blériot could see how far we have come. We launch across the vast Pacific to S.E Asia and Hawaii without a second thought while watching movies and munching on peanuts at FL410.
