Is ActiveSky for XP12 still relevant?

Featured Replies

I used ActiveSky in MSFS and was quite impressed. I have no experience with AS in XP so wondered if it is worth a look seeing as how the weather has been improved in XP12.

Anyone got it and would recommend?

External Storage Three 4Tb HDs

Not really, haven't use it for a while (although just tested it last week to see if any improvement, sadly none)

The biggest issue is ASXP12 only set global weather based on your aircraft position, rather than the voxel system, so when you are in a thunderstorm,  the whole world is in thunderstorm, and when you are out of it, you can't find that CB anywhere, and most aircraft add-on use XP's default WXR system so WXR won't have any help (unlike in P3D most high-end add-on use AS's API to at least show where the CB is)

You can use it in passive mode to get some additional effect on top of XP's own realwearher, but I really can't tell any difference.

We're actively working with some new XP 12 API improvements specifically related to this. Stay tuned for more.

I can't see passive mode in ASXP - must be in a different place to the MSFS version. I'll have another look.

I do not worry too much about the global weather model in an app that doesn't have full access to the weather system.  I'm not concerned about gradual transitions between weather areas.

I found the transitions in ASXP to be quite jarring. Could be my settings. I tried changing various options based on suggestions I read online and in the manual but could never get the transitions to be smooth. I would be flying along in, say, scattered cloud conditions and then as I approached an airport, WHAM1, the weather would just change as if I'd been teleported to some other part of the world.

I freely admit that it is likely down to user-error with me making dumb settings choices and being an idtiot and all but I ended up giving up and just sticking with XP's native weather.

I'm still using AS XP12.  I don't notice or pay attention to transition changes.  Only every once in a while will I notice a sudden change but it's over with before I know it, so to me it's not a big deal.  I'm running hybrid depiction mode and with XP12.2, I'm seeing some wonderful cloud formations.

Looking forward to the api improvements Damian mentioned above.  I'm very happy that they (HIFI) are still actively supporting XP!

My specs:  AMD Ryzen 5 5600X @ 3.7 GHz, 32 GB 3200MHz DDR4, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 12 GB, 2TB SAMSUNG EVO Plus SSD M2, 2TB WD Black Gaming SSD M2, 8TB WD Black Gaming HDD, 4TB WD Black Gaming Ext HDD, Windows 10, X-Plane 12 + large quantity of 3rd party addons scenery & aircraft. Honeycomb Alpha & Bravo, Thrustmaster TFRP. It's an older machine but gets the job done quite nicely - smooth with no stutters!

I personally can not see the point in using it with either MSFS or XP12. i like to see different weather systems in the distance.

You're the second person to mention hybrid mode in XP12 - where is it?  In the MSFS version it is 'passive' mode, but I can't find it in AS XP!

Found it in the menus ☺️

I use it for historical weather when I fly in Alaska, let's see if there are improvements in the Xplane api and they can improve the current version.

There are both options in the Options > Simulator Depiction Options & select from this dropdown menu (XP12 version).
