Registry Hack for Image Sharpening Not Working (for me)

Featured Replies

I installed the latest NVIDIA GPU driver for my RTX 4090.

I did the registry hack (EnableGR535 to '0').

But I still have Image Scaling in the NVCP after a PC reboot.

Can't for the life of me think what's wrong. I double checked the registry to ensure I had made the correct change.

Any help?

What is the entry for GR53 above GR535?

I'm using a GPU driver from early 2025 and it works here.  Double check GR53 is set to '1'.

Also, FWIW, I use TAA w/ Render Scale set to 130 which adds yet another level of sharp.

I think Nvidia may have nerfed it with a recent driver. I don't know why they would do that, but...

Filters have not worked for a while now, don't know why they don't fix this either. I am using Reshade to accomplish the look I want, though I would prefer Nvidia filters if they put them back in.

Thanks for the warning.  As I was contemplating updating GPU driver and installing NV App I do not want to lose the sharpening hack it's awesome, especially combined with Render Scale of 130-140 on my display.  Suddenly though, two flights back, NV DLSS Frame Generation no longer is an option in MSFS 2024 settings, very strange that has never happened.  Fortunately FSR is working.

Can you describe this sharping hack ?

  • Image Sharpening Removal: A while back, NVIDIA removed the old Image Sharpening toggle in favour of Image Scaling. Some simmers preferred the old sharpening method because it looked cleaner in MSFS without over-sharpening clouds or UI elements.

  • The Hack (EnableGR535): By changing that registry entry, users could disable the “new” scaling method and get back the old per-game sharpening option in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

  • Why You Still See It: Even after the hack, the Image Scaling option usually remains in the NVIDIA Control Panel. That’s normal. The registry edit just stops the driver from enforcing the new behaviour, but it doesn’t remove the UI entry.

The Hack (EnableGR535)   It's actually Disable GR535:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvlddmkm\Parameters\FTS
Go to GR535, change from Hex 1 to 0

What % of sharpen is the "best"? And I assume it's good practice to turn of AMD sharpen within the sim?

I use its default of 50 I think it is.  And still use AMD at 100, and Render Scale of 130 on my 3440x1440 display and it's incredible!

My mistake, this still works. I had left out the Parameters folder when entering the registry. So, this does bring back the sharpening option we used to have.

I'm still not sure it works with the latest couple of drivers though, when I enabled it and then made some sharpening changes it did not seem to have an effect. Perhaps you have to make an adjustment and restart the sim to see the change.
