FS2020 DX12 Drivers NVIDIA

Featured Replies

There are many posts in a number of forums that indicate that it is necessary to upgrade fs2020 to DX12 for proper operation with the latest NVIDIA drivers. What about this?

It is just the Nvidia App that requires DX12 with MSFS2020.  If you have the Nvidia App DX11 will CTD before it even loads.  Removing the Nvidia App resolves the issue although outside of VRAM reduction there is really no good reason to avoid DX12 at this point.

So DX11 without Nvidia App should be fine DX11 with Nvidia App will crash however you do NOT need the app for the drivers.  They are completely independant and the app is not required.

Hope that helps

Is it better to use DX12 instead of DX11? Performance and stability wise.
I play at a 1440p screen, on TAA, with a 7950x3D and 4090 GPU, 64GB RAM with 6000mhz speed.

You should have no problems at all running in DX12 mode with your setup.

Absolutely. With your config, no doubt that DX12 is better.

Wow, that's a lot. What settings do you use, apart from the FG mod?

Main rig: self built, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (with SMT off and CO -50 mV), 2x16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, Nvidia RTX 5060Ti 16GB, 256 GB M.2 SSD (OS+apps) + 2x1 TB SATA III SSD (sims) + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (storage), ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS air cooler, Viewsonic VX2458-MHD 1920x1080@120-144 Hz (G-sync compatible), Windows 11. Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020, MSFS2024 and even FS9! Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .

VKB Gladiator NXT Premium Left + GNX THQ as primary controllers. Xbox Series X|S wireless controller as standby/mobile.

Thank you! Is there a change in options I can make in my Nvidia panel or MSFS options to make good use of DX12? I always use DX11 but now I will try to make use of a higher GPU ussage. With a 1440p it is like between 30-50 procent max. Never higher. But still sometimes I can see that the stable 50 fps, goes like to 49 and up to 50 and again to 49, so one the flight. Before SU16 I did not had this. I have a 50-75 hz screen and for MSFS I play like on a 50 hz screen so it is smooth. I have locked my FPS in Nvidia panel to 50fps.

MSFS 202 will CTD when used with DX 11 even without the NVIDIA app installed. It's a known issue. Has been for 8 plus months.

It was not an issue for me until very recently. Shortly after a Windows 10 update.....

Same here. Never had issues until recently, maybe within last month or so. I’m not using the NVIDIA app but would still get the DXDI error from time to time. Updated to 581.15 today but now see that it seems to be an issue with the NVIDIA App and/or DirectX 12. Might have to switch to DirectX 12 in my 2080Ti and see how that works.

DX12 works better with my GTX 980Ti than I expected, so you should be OK with your RTX 2080Ti.

I guess I'm the exception to the rule then.... I never had any CTD in relation to DX11

Same and when I had the Nvidia App issue with DX11 simply removing the app allowed MSFS to load again and i could switch back to DX12.

No issues with DX11 without the app.
