October 2, 2025Oct 2 I wonder, since the shadows in msfs2024 is a bit blurry even in 2048, I have tried to change the resolutin in user.opt cfg to 4096, but there is no change in the sim, still reads 2048... (but i reads 4096 in user.opt cfg...) What am I doing wrong? Regards Per
October 2, 2025Oct 2 Have you tried enabling ray traced shadows? This option makes shadows much sharper without having to use extreme resolution settings.

Regards Per Remember that in the sim's user interface the highest value it shows is 2048, but for example I run 6144 and it is staying in the usercfg.opt file. On a major sim update you may need to double-check your usercfg.opt to make sure it wasn't overwritten but otherwise, it stays for me. I'm not a VR user so I am no expert on their setups, if you run VR, you may need to set it in the (GraphicsVR section as well but I'd check with VR people on that. October 3, 2025Oct 3 Author Yes, but how do you guys do to KEEP the value? Mine reads 4096 in the opt.cfg, that is correct, BUT in the sim, the value i STILL 2048 (the value i see in general settings...) So what am I doing wrong??? Edited October 3, 2025Oct 3 by buspelle

I would try to change the setting within the sim to let's say 1024 so that the usercfg.opt changes to 1024 and then when you close your sim again do the edit to 4096 and save the file again followed by a new startup of the sim. After that it is important to not alter the shadow setting again and it hopefully should stick. Also verify that it is not the VR section of the settings you are changing it in since it is easy to scroll past the settings for non VR mode. If it doesn't work you could copy in the part of the usercfg you are doing the edit just to confirm that it is indeed the correct shadow setting you are editing. October 3, 2025Oct 3 Author Thanks, but I have tried that, but I will give it a go once again! I get back and report the status! 👍

If that is the case, a simple comparison between two screenshots in the cockpit of first setting 512 followed by editing the file to 4096 and start the sim again in the same scenario to verify if the shadows are indeed set to 4096 since the difference between those two are significant. October 3, 2025Oct 3 Author So if the value in the sim reads 2048, and i have changed it to 4096 in user opt.cfg, the actual value IS 4096? Even if the sim settings still show 2048? In msfs 2020 i saw the correct value, 4096, that i had written in user cfg.opt, also appeared inside the sim settings... So maybe 2024 is different then? I look at the screen shadow more closely next time i start up the sim 2024! 👍🙏
