the answer may be "none". I once was vectored into the mountains North of CYQB on Vatsim by an inexperienced human controller. I would expect that the guys on Pilotedge are experienced enough to not do it. But even they could be drunk sometimes 🙂

I’m now thinking back about my drive up the Rocky Mountain National Park Scenic Road…to the nerve-wracking heights of 12,000 ft (higher than what you were flying on your night adventure here…)…

I'm not sure any flight planning service IRL as well as in the sim, will consider you minimum sector altitudes for you.  Your filed flight plan is your responsiblity and it's assumed that your filed plan considers the minimum sector altitudes for your routing.

Simbrief will assign a cruise altitude automatically, but the field is still there in input section, for you to specify an altitude yourself, which will then be used in the OFP.

In short, if we check our charts etc and enter a safe and suitable altitude into Simbrief, Simbrief will then give us an OFP with a safe and suitable altitude. 🙂
 

My approach would be to import the flight plan into LittleNavMap - then check the terrain/altitude profile and adjust the plan accordingly.

BATC does a fair job in the mountains....sometimes...so when it looks like BATC might be sleeping I depend on enabling LittleNavMap's Show Minimum off-route Altitude Grid.  One serious flaw, I feel, in BATC's ATC is that it does not pay close attention to your current altitude, at all.  Weird but true at least when I checked if that was the case on their Discord channel.

Speaking of BATC i gave them a shot at the same flight (KCOS to KTEX) and BATC handled it much better, directing me through the Rockies in my little C172. FSHud just seemed to get confused, going into a loop. I will try another flight with BATC tonight.

And here was where I got this confirmed:  "It doesn't check altitude"  Even old FSX ATC paid attention to your altitude:

Essentially, besides just the ATC, you need some sort of supplementary support such as sectional elevation charts, LittleNavMap, G1000/G3000 MFD, or even the (default) MSFS EFB Terrain Map…to stay safe in this mountainous region, even in our virtual world…🙂…

This is especially true in night conditions, unless you’re flying well above the highest summit of the entire North American Rockies range, Mount Elbert (14,400 ft), located about 100 miles southwest of Denver. On one of my trips to Denver, I’d visited this mountain, also done so in the MSFS world.

Sometimes, en route, I prefer to break off ATC to explore (via VFR) such scenery at lower altitudes. So, unless you’re strictly adherent to your flight plan and route, it may be worthwhile to explore these mountains…their ridges, valleys, and summits from the air…in our virtual world..

It all depends on your interest…while flying over and across the Rocky Mountains.

When flying RW from Chicago in a jetliner to the west coast, at 30,000 ft, I always look for the Rockies and the Sierra Nevadas passing by below…🙂…
