Constant updates to FS2020 necessary?

Featured Replies

Almost everytime I load the game, it indicates that I must perform an update, otherwise I cannot start flying. The title shows a scenery upgrade, usually a particular area. Now these updates are massive, and my C drive is getting close to full capacity.

Can I bypass the upload and go straight to the main menu?

Sim updates are mandatory. World updates are optional.

If you've downloaded World updates (and there are many of those) and they are filling up your drive you can go to the Contents manager and delete what you don't need/want.

Constant?  I see updates every nav-cycle (28 days) that are nothing more than nav data updates.  These account for the vast majority of "required updates".   As for the others, no you can't opt-out, but you can limit how much new data you have to load by simply not downloading and installing the free updates in Marketplace.  Your choice.

That's not exactly constant and the vast majority are simply keeping up with the real world nav cycle and don't eat disk space as they mostly replace data that's already there.

If you mean a monthly AIRAC update (to keep your navigation data up-to-date) something that could be qualified as "constant", well, yes, they're very necessary and welcome.

Apart of those AIRAC updates, having one or two updates every month is nothing to be concerned about and it depends on your particular installation.

The world updates are good, but not released often, the latest one was for Japan, and happened months ago.

The sim updates - in the best case - it only happen once a year, if any.

So, please, they're absolutely not "constant".

Cheers, Ed

Hi Eytan:

As said above already, the MSFS updates are far from constant (speaking for both MSFS2020 of my past and the MSFS2024 of the present).

MSFS is actually pretty good about letting you know of the mandatory updates (only once in a while), otherwise most others are optional, that you can act on at your own convenience.

Please check the Notification bell for any pending updates. I’ve now several updates from my Marketplace purchases that have been bugging me for a while on each start-up e.g., for custom scenery and a/c livery updates, that I’ve ignored for a month now.

It’s, of course, better to stay up-to-date, but certainly not mandatory.

Happy flying…!

They are tiny little world scenery updates these days usually smaller than 1GB.
