Picture Censorship in UK

Featured Replies

Can anyone help with the problem of some Pics which are posted in this Forum being blocked in the UK.

Is there a way to see these pics that are blocked....      this is what I see for some pictures posted -

Two possible solutions I can think of:

1.  make use of a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and set it up as if you're in (almost) any other country
or,
2.  elect better governance

It's an unforseen consequence of an attempt to protect children from the worst excesses of the internet.
The fines for non-compliance are draconian, so imgur appear to have decided that the best way forward
for them is to switch off their service to the UK.

Who could possibly have anticipated that might happen.

There is a multitude of good and free image sharing platforms out there. I would rather support one that gave a stuff about protecting children and not avoiding fines for violating data protection laws.

 9950X3D - X870E Aorus Master- TUF 5090 OC - 64GB DDR5 - 1500W HXi - Titan 360 RX LCD - 9100 Pro x 2  - LG 45GX950A - HOTAS Warthog with Ava Base

There are alternatives to Imgur, that work in the UK. This one works well, can be used without sign up, very intuitive.

Yes, use a VPN to connect to the website you want to browse and make sure the VPN server is outside of the UK or whatever region/country is blocking.  I use MalwareBytes VPN services, but currently in the US so far imgUR is not being blocked but since the FCC is now under hostile attack by our government who knows what we might be able to see or not see in the future … even more reason to have a VPN service.

Oh and of course don’t use any router/switch made outside the USA because we all know they aren’t safe and ignore the fact the US government is exempt and this only applies to the US home population … yeah, I wish I were kidding but that’s the level of insanity we’re currently at.

For image hosting services, I would avoid imgBB … had a horrible time uploading (Internal Server error) with their website which is pretty feeble attempt at an interface/service.

A good option is Flickr (Pro version is even better but not free).  What you want to look for in hosting service, then make sure you have the ability to direct link the image AND to make sure the hosting services is NOT converting your images to lower quality.

If it were truly about protecting the children, then I'd agree with you; but it's not about protecting the kids.   It's all about control and censorship.

The authoritarians will go after VPNs next.

And what, you are against censorship regardless of what they are censoring??

I'm against governments censoring anything.

Individuals and businesses can censor themselves if they wish and put in protections for children, or make parents do their job and protect their own children instead of expecting others to do it for them, but govt. should not.  This is the first of of several steps in taking complete control over the Internet and information, and ultimately eliminating free speech, which they fully intend to do.

Censorship is a double-edged sword.  Why is violence/death/guns not censored but a naked female/male/other is … a lack of consistency?  Censorship comes out of a belief system rather than evidence driven system of cause and effect process.

Why is obviously false information with zero supporting evidence allowed to proliferate?  If censorship were consistently applied, there would be no religions.

Why is evidence redacted with endless pages of black lines or blacked out images and video 😉 … it’s another tool that is abused to prevent accountability and knowledge gathering.

Anyway, it is what it is and I doubt we’ll evolve beyond the need for censorship and it’s positive and negative consequences.  So per my suggestion, VPN will get around this specific blanket process established by a government or governments.

All of which I agree with, and all of which is exactly why you don't want any govt. making those decisions.  Private companies and indivduals can make their own decisions about what speech they will allow and forbid, and the free marketplace will provide numerous alternatives for all kinds of speech.

The concept is pretty simple.  I as a property owner can decide exactly what speech I will allow on my premises, and I can expel anyone who violates my rules.  This concept applies to physical property including businesses, as well as websites.  Obviously, if I own a business and do something extreme like not allow people of a certain race or gender to enter, I will likely go bust pretty quick, so no sane business owner would ever do that.  Believe it or not, society is quite capable, most of the time, of regulating itself with reasonable rules put in place, and only occasionally do we need a govt. authority or court to intervene, but they should be there if we need them, otherwise it's anarchy and chaos.
