Alt doesn’t remove the menu bar

Strange problem that started last weekend so possibly connected to Windows update.

The title bar in v5 shows by default. To remove it I just press the ALT key. But it stays there. I have to right click the background and then select the option to hide it.

Anyone else seeing this?

I had to tap both ALT key together to remove the menu bar on P3Dv3.  It use to be just one ALT key.

Getting a bit confused here. Do you mean the Menu bar, as stated in the title? That, I have always right clicked to remove but now having read this I find that Alt (held down briefly) does remove it and re- apply it. The title bar stays, there seems to be no menu item to remove it, only applying Full screen or Lossless.

Yes, sorry. But if you’re on Windows 10 then ALT will remove it. Seems to be a problem for 11 users and only in the last couple of weeks.

The Prepar3d.cfg has an entry HideMenuNormal=0

Set it to 1 and that should help.

I noticed a Steam user also bringing such an issue up in the FSX-SE forums.

I guess Win11 is a magnet for introducing more new and exciting bugs...

And now with built in AI-Slop 😉

I recently found a tool to assist with cleaning up Windows, people might find it of use.

Win11 is indeed strange. I have W11 on an unsupported PC and my ALT key does exactly what is expected, without the Reg. entry. (Could be the fact that I cannot update without a major "hack").

Any specific issues you’ve fixed? It doesn’t look like something for the average user.

What version of Win11 are you running, @Ray Proudfoot? 23H2, 24H2, or 25H2?

This is because yesterday I gave 24H2 a try and faced the same issue, in both V4 and V5. As soon as I rolled back to 23H2, everything was fixed. I'm sure this means a Windows update doing its thing.

The PC is off at present but I’m up to date so 25H2 probably. Even if you roll back won’t Windows keep applying updates? I can live with the menu issue which is definitely down to a recent update. Microsoft aren’t what they used to be. 🙄

Looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. I tried that HideMenuNormal=0 0-to-1 fix and that didn't do anything. The quickest way I know to get to a clean full screen in P3D v5 is to hit Alt+Enter twice. The first time it takes you out of full screen, and the second time it puts you back into full screen with the menu gone. Hit Alt to get it back.

Hi Ray,

For myself it's more about getting Windows setup to the sort of functionality I'm after, and yeah it's a little more on the tech side but then again I've spent over 20 years in I.T. and software development and the tech side is what I lean to.

The tool does have help options and a person can always Google a particular item to gain a fuller understanding of said item, plus item changes are typically easily reversed.

For instance I don't use Edge, but I do know some web components are installed along with Edge and maybe needed by other apps, so I don't want to uninstall Edge, but I also don't want it starting threads automatically behind the scenes unless I've commanded, so we can disable Start Boost which is just a fancy name for auto run in the background and thus prevent Edge running threads even when you've not opened Edge.

Edge also has a settings option of "Continue running background extensions and apps when Edge is closed" which I set to off, as when I close Edge I expect it to also close any child ops it may have started.

I also don't buy into the so called A.I. "Features" MS is foisting upon people and thus I've removed said A.I. from Windows.

If you look into the corporate logic of MS you should be able to see they don't really care for the users of Windows per-say... Users are just a temp hindrance to be turned to the path of subscription income, corporate control and as much A.I. slop as MS can pump into Windows, their apps and Azure server systems... all while shoving advertising and selling your data to third parties based on your workstation's TPM I.D. value and subsequent history profile.

and no I don't have a tinfoil hat 😁

Cheers
