BATC and AIRAC cycles

Featured Replies

I am a fairly new user of MSFS 2024 and although lately I have occasionally had a good flight with MSFS ATC (post SU4), more often than not I need to disregard ATC instructions to complete the flight. Consequently, I am considering purchasing BATC.

Prior to purchasing, I would like to confirm my understanding as to how BATC utilizes AIRAC data. It appears that to load a flight plan into BATC you must do so via SimBrief. The AIRAC cycle utilized by SimBrief for generating a flight plan is the later of the last AIRAC cycle you purchased from Navigraph or the SimBrief default AIRAC cycle (currently 2503). The Nav data that is utilized by BATC, however, is from MSFS 2024, which appears to be updated each month to the most current AIRAC cycle. Therefore, unless your SimBrief AIRAC cycle coincides with the MSFS 2024 AIRAC cycle, the BATC FAQ indicates, "...you may encounter specific discrepancies".

It appears then that in order to utilize BATC without "specific discrepancies", a monthly Navigraph subscription is additionally required. Would that be correct or am I misunderstanding?

Thank you very much.

As far as I am aware BATC have a close relationship with Navigraph, so yes anyone with a subscription is covered, and this will also include BATC's latest innovation regarding Live AI aircraft running alongside (but outside of) MSFS. For those without a Navigraph sub it make no difference as the AIRAC used will be the default included in MSFS. It will however disrupt some flights into airports where the ILS is out of alignment, however this can be alleviated some what by the the use of Aero Soars software (do a search). BATC, although not shipped with as many bells and whistles as SI has "many" advantages such as, One payment, local voices (free) are now almost indistinguishable from subscription voices with many accents from all parts of the World, IFR and VFR ATC that is improving with every update of which there are many and a great UI, which makes it a dream to use.

Thank you for your response SierraHotel BSc. BATC, although still in development, does seem like a good alternative to the MSFS 2024 ATC and it is nice to read that you are quite happy using it. I am just trying to understand the financial commitment to effectively utilize BATC over and above the one-time software payment.

I have utilized Navigraph previously and find it to be a very good product, but would generally purchase a subscription once every 6-9 months or so. I guess I need to decide whether I will purchase an annual subscription or remain on a 6-9 month schedule and accept the "specific discrepancies".

You should consider fshud. I have had BATC for over a year and while it is improving, I just purchases fshud and after the first few flights, I definitely prefer it in most aspects. You can just get a one month sub to Navigraph to get all your Navdata in sync with it, Simbrief and msfs.

No Navigraph needed for BATC. The base sim navdata is working fine and is updated regularly.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

Definately agree.

Thank you everyone for your responses. They are very much appreciated.

I will definitely take a look at FsHud and get familiar with its capabilities.

"No Navigraph needed for BATC. The base sim navdata is working fine and is updated regularly."

My concern (or maybe confusion!) is that although BATC utilizes up to date MSFS 2024 nav data, I believe you must generate your flight plan from SimBrief and not the MSFS 2024 EFB flight planner. SimBrief creates flight plans using data from its' default or your last purchased Navigraph AIRAC cycle, consequently the data used to generate your flight plan is potentially different from the data used by BATC to provide ATC. However, maybe in practice any discrepancies are rare, minor and of little consequence.

Thank you all again for your input.

Even though it's still a work in progress, I recommend BATC with the AIG fleet. You don't need a navigrapg sub. It's getting better and you can contribute to these talented devs by buying additional premium voice packs or join the experimental. There are some flights where I'm just blown away by how great the addon is, but sometimes it doesn't do as well as I'd like. Try it!

When you sub to navigraph, you can use the navigraph hub to update the navdata for the sim. BATC will then read the navigraph navdata over the sim's default.

Thank you bork. I guess I had not thought about that if you changed the base sim navdata that BATC would be able to recognize and utilize it. A couple of questions though -

1) If at some point one decides to revert back to utilizing the base sim navdata vs. Navigraph navdata is it a simple process to do so?

2) Are the base sim nav charts (i.e. LIDO charts, FAA charts) still available if you override the base sim navdata with Navigraph navdata? (further - if you discontinue Navigraph for a few months and thereby lose Navigraph charts access, are the base sim charts still available to use).

Thank you very much.
