More heat and humidity on the way

Yes it’s a bit hot for simming, both from a comfort and as you say a technical view. It should be cooling off over the weekend according to my phone.

Having recorded the weather since May 2009 I’ve gone through plenty of hot spells. Only one day has caused me to take out of the ordinary steps. July 2022 when it hit 38.4°C. I opened the large lounge

My house was built in 1896 when they knew a thing or two about building houses and thermodynamics.

Ours was built in 1839, 3 bed granite cottage. Our walls are very thick too, and I know exactly what you mean regarding thermal mass.

In these temps the house certainly hasn't been keeping us cool though, and upstairs in the evening is sweltering.

If we keep the windows open in the evenining and somebody accidently puts the light on we get some interesting wildlife visitors. 😀

I'm not sure if they had better knowledge of thermodynamics in those days or if they just used the materials they had access to, in this case granite.

Guys, here’s the solution for this problem. And it originated in your own country. Get with it!

Jersey provisionally recorded a record-breaking maximum temperature of roughly 39°C today, surpassing its previous all-time record set in July 2022.

It looks like those thunderstorms are approaching you now from the south. Jersey Airport is giving a PROB 40 TEMPO for modererate thunderstorms 18-24Z and a PROB 30 TEMPO for heavy thunderstorms for the same time period.

What site is that Ray?

I’ve bought the premium windy service and have it on my work iPad. Quite useful, even more so at the end of the year when we get starlink high speed internet on the flight deck

Basic service is free but with a sub more detailed info is available. Lots of useful options including jet stream. Best I’ve found. Same people who supply data to Asobo I believe.

High speed only for the flight deck sounds great. If passengers as well… eekkk! 😳

Italian houses are also built with relatively thick brick walls with stucco on the exterior and interior.

Thick brick or concrete walls do keep the house cooler in hot weather, but there are limits. First it depends on how thick the stone is - a foot is pretty good, but 2 feet is better, almost like a cave. Regardless, that stone/concrete/brick will warm up eventually, especially if the sun is hitting it much of the day, and once that stone gets warm, it takes a long time for it to lose its heat. These types of houses are also notoriously hard to heat in the winter.

In the U.S. we use fiberglass or foam insulation which helps insulate against both heat and cold. Some houses, especially in the south, have a 4-inch brick exterior facade that also helps with heat insulation.

My weather station has been running since May 2009. The highest recorded dew point temperature was recorded yesterday - 23.6°C. That made it pretty uncomfortable despite the air temperature being 33.1°C - 5.6°C below the highest maximum back in July 2022.

Humidity was the big difference. Just 22% in 2022 compared to 52% yesterday.

That's about 92F with 52% humidity -- that is right up there with what we usually get daily June/July/August. I feel for you fellows in the UK...and France and elsewhere who don't have A/C with those levels of heat & humidity. I'd move my sim rig to the cellar!

My house has a brick facade all the way around. I am also blessed with two large oaks on the south side. At least I think the positives of those two oaks outweigh the negatives (acorns).

Typical British construction is an inner and outer brick leaf with modern houses insulated in between. Prior to 1920 it was double brick with no cavity.

Plenty of the above in Jersey but also granite cottages. Many of them converted from farm buildings. Our walls are about 18 inches thick. No damp course as the granite isnt hygroscopic like brick.

It’s not been pleasant. I’ve slept okay but when the sun is rising at 4:40am it’s getting too warm in my SE-facing bedroom by 7am even with big windows open.

PC is in a WNW facing bedroom but I’ve not had the energy to fly since last Sunday. Atlantic air returns over the weekend thank god.
