  1. In RL I've never heard tire squeal on landing in anything larger than a Cessna... You certainly cannot hear it from the cockpit/cabin of any airliner today. Even externally any sound given off by the tires is squelched out by the sound of wind and idle thrust. I spent almost three years as a ramper and have spent many hours watching 737s take off and land, at times as little as 100' away from the touchdown point, and you still cannot hear the tires even on cold winter nights when the airport is dead, where the only aircraft you hear is the last term coming in for the night.
  2. I've had this intermittently for a while and assumed it was just a 737 quirk when not pressurized.
  3. I managed to snag two Touchpads during last weekend's madness... Hoping to snag a few more as the last of the inventory dries up (they make great gifts and have pretty decent resale value too!). I haven't tried it as a kneeboard yet (have a second monitor for charts/checklists/other stuff), but having a dedicated checklist screen would be nice. I should put some velcro on the back and try it out! :)
  4. The Helios screw did screw up pretty badly, but having the same warning sound with no annunciations is a pretty big fail on Boeing's part.
  5. The approaches at LOWI and ENBO are not aligned with the runway. The approaches at Innsbruck aren't even named after a runway (West and East LOC approaches), which may be some European thing. I believe in the US they're associated with the runway unless they are >30 degrees off, at which point they are circling only approaches (but don't quote me on that... its been a while since instrument training!). Straight in minimums are still published, so I'm not sure why they aren't called the LOC/DME 08 and LOC/DME 26...
  6. I have a button on my yoke for pausing input, but for the most part the control resolution is fine enough to hold the view steady while I'm turning a knob or flipping a switch.
  7. IMO, hand flying the NGX is much much easier and enjoyable with TrackIR... Above 5-10k its paused 90% of the time, but below that it's unbeatable for its immersion factor. It really give a "VR"-like feel to the cockpit, having to physically tilt my head upwards to manipulate the overhead, or turn to the right to see the Bonanza at 2 o'clock, or to judge a base-to-final turn. It offers a level of control that a hat or static POVs do not, and I couldn't fly without it!
  8. I use the CH yoke and set it up with their crappy software package only to get my left trigger as a PTT button for Vatsim. However I do have independent throttles (levers 2+3) with my speedbrake as lever 1. I haven't had any issues with control and the blue arc works as intended (independent and only when moving). I don't have the full version of FSUIPC (though I assume I probably have the basic version somewhere around) but have never used it for calibrating anything.
  9. Core i7-920 @ 3.35 Ghz (low because of stock cooling), Gigabyte EX58-UD4P Mobo, 6GB DDR3, Radeon 4850 512MB, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit... Havn't had a CTD yet (except ending a flight, kinda lame but acceptable).
  10. I usually turn off the AP/AT at the outer marker, unless its been a long flight and I've been hitting the liquor cart a little too much!
  11. Oh, lame, but thanks for the clarification. I guess it makes sense that the GPWS wouldn't be able to predict windshear without a radar :).
  12. Now that the initial flood of forum posts has (somewhat) subsided, *bump* :).
  13. Chocks out (FS Actions menu IIRC) :).
  14. Not sure about the real thing but just booted up mine (any excuse not to go to bed!) from cold and dark to test the warning horn and didn't even touch the IRS/CDU. The horn went away as soon as I had configured the flaps, trim, parking brake, and chocks (since PMDG basically made the chocks a parking brake anyway).
  15. AFAIK the only things that will set off the takeoff config horn are:FlapsTrimParking brakeChocks (this will set off the takeoff config alarm in the NGX).
  16. Alternatively click the input line (where text appears when input using the FMC keypad). A neon green rectangle will appear indicating it is accepting keyboard input. Very handy for quick pre-flight entries!
  17. Hello all, First off I'm absolutely loving the NGX (despite having to wait for the -700 haha)! However, I do have a slight issue with the GPWS test audio and suspect that its simply a difference between operators that isn't covered. I used to be a ramper for Southwest and have spent a good deal of time in NG cockpits, and specifically remember part of the test audio for windshear being: "Windshear! Windshear!" (simulated)"Go around! Windshear ahead! Windshear ahead!" (not simulated) Nitpicking I know, but just wondered what the official word was on this :).
  18. I placed my order, downloaded at 1.9 MB/s (about 5 mins for 600+ MB), installed in 5 mins, activated right away, and am flying it now. Haven't had any issues whatsoever with it yet (except my brakes overheating and basically failing after I tried two RTOs!). Fantastic aircraft... Ordering a pizza and about to do a flight from KMDW to somewhere (haven't planned that far out yet). I feel for those that can't get it working correctly, but from what I can tell everything is functioning exactly as it should (minor issue with the GPWS test and windshear alerts, but that's another story for another day when PMDG doesnt have its hands full!)
  19. Downloading it now... I probably avoided the initial rush and whatnot but still not bad!
  20. The pitot tubes don't affect the altimeter readings at all. However, the pitot heat on the 737 also heats the static ports. If you have a blocked or iced over static port (is this even simulated in FS?), the affected altimeter would be frozen (as would the VSI), and the airspeed indicator using the same pitot/static system would be erratic as well (indicate higher as you descend, indicate lower as you climb).
  21. A 'godlike computer' is only as good as the person between the keyboard and chair.
  22. Meh that'd be only 5 hours... Time for me to get home from work and dust off FSX!
  23. The left one (TV/monitor running FS9) is 42" and the right one (displaying flight aware and SquawkBox) is 24". For size comparison the desk is about 5' long. Those two plus my computer put out some serious heat!
