  1. Ivy Bridge are still good processors and I like the idea of not wondering when the "next" fastest CPU will be released - the 3770 is the fastest for that series! In the past this sort of logic has given me a good "bang for buck" experience. Also I'm disappointed with Haswell's thermal performance when overclocking - I don't want to play around with delidding.
  2. A lot of people seem to be recommending the 4GB version above the 2GB particularly for muti display setups. However since the GTX770s memory bandwidth is 256bit (compared to GTX780s 3GB 384bit VRAM). I'm planning: i7-3770 (OC ~ 4GHz) GTX770 8GB DDR3 Mainly for X-Plane and some FSX. Q1) Am I going to be able to make good use of double the VRAM fon the 4GB card for the same memory bandwidth? Q2) Do I really need 4GB VRAM in the X-Plane server machine when I can network more PC's for additional views?
  3. Hi I'd appreciate any ideas on what might be the fault with my GTX285 and if there is anything I can do. Please "don't get your card wet is not going to be helpful LOL!). It's a long story! But my gaming PC ended up getting pelted by rain when the wind blew a window wide open. Drops of water dripped onto the circuit board of my GTX 285 inside the PC. The PC was on when is git wet, when I discovered it it had shut down. The PC appears to be working OK with another graphics card. The part of the circuit board that got wet is right above the two 6-pin power receptacles (at the end of the card). Consider the orientation of the graphics card when installed with the back circuit board of the card facing upward; there are two 6-pin power - lets call #2 the one closest to the end and #1 beside it. I'm left with the following behaviour wihen I install my GTX 285 (and when I use a different PSU): 1) With no 6-pin power connectors attached when switched on nothing happens. 2) With 6-pin #1 only connected when the PC is switched on it sounds as if it's beginning the boot sequence but the monitor receives a blank signal (on either DVI output), graphics card fan is spinning. 3) With 6-pin #2 only connected when the PC is switched on nothing happens. 4) With both 6-pins attached nothing happens. :(((.
  4. By the way, what graphics card would be equivalent to a GTX285 out of the Nvidia 7## (or 6##) series cards?
  5. I also have an aging main FS PC with a GTX285. What do people think about the Geforce 750 for use on slave machines in a networked FS setup - adequate? My issue is that I'd prefer to avoid having to buy new PSUs; for most of my slave machines have 300W PSUs.
  6. Thanks for your replies, interesting, I'll check out those links.
  7. Anyone know why the ZFWCG is out of range when the aircraft (all versions) has no payload or passengers? How do pilots fly the aircraft when it's empty? This is according to the MD-11 load manager.
  8. I don't want to hijack this thread but something I can't figure out. From the VC when I press the click spot on the parking break lever to engage the parking break, the click spot then disappears so that I have to use the keyboard combination to disengage the parking break. Is that normal?
  9. I'm inclined to go with the Kingston but at 2.2V and given they have regular heat spreaders, might heat be a problem?
  10. The RAM arrived but it looks as though I'm not going to get more than about 40MHz additional speed if I overclock which implies an overcock of around 3.8GHz if I'm lucky :( (I was running at 3.93GHz stable). So I might sell these replacement modules and buy some other DDR2-8500. I'm not planning to overclock the memory so don't want to spend more than about £70, what do people think about these 4GB DDR2-8500 kits: Kingston HyperX Genesis KHX8500D2K2/4G @ 2.2V £55.99 G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK @ 2.0-2.1V (not sure why they specify a voltage range?) £61.99 Thanks in advance for any replies.
  11. I've decided to go with the PC2-6400 that they offered. They offered an 8GB Vengeance DDR3 kit but I'd only be interested in a Dominator DDR3 kit.
  12. Corsair said that the XMS PC2-6400 they offered is the best DDR2 they have and that refund is not an option. They did say that they could offer DDR3 and I'm waiting to hear back from them, although I really wasn't planning for a new system and don't have the money right now. I've searched a bit and there are very few PC2-8500 2x2GB kits available, and it appears that DDR2 is relatively more expensive than DDR3. So if they offer a DDR3 replacement am I justified in expecting an 8GB kit rather than a 4GB kit? I get the impression that 8GB DDR3 for 64-bit systems is the standard compared to 4GB DDR2 when I built my system a few years ago.
  13. Does anyone have any idea how Corsair XMS PC2-6400 overclocks? I had been running the PC2-8500 at stock speed.
  14. My memory has lifetime warranty and one of the modules from my PC2-8500 kit failed. However because the modules are obsolete the closest replacement they can offer is a PC2-6400 kit. Corsair Vengence TWIN2X4096-8500C5D 4GB kit PC2-8500 (1066MHz) 5-5-5-24 2.1V for Corsair XMS TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX 4GB kit PC2-6400 (800MHz) 5-5-5-15 1.8V I believe that both models have the same heat spreader. Is this a reasonable replacement or should I seek some kind of refund and buy another brand of PC2-8500 modules?
  15. I used that one in FS9 but found that many of the systems were not fully modeled and because the FSX version was based on the FS9 version there were bugs in the flight dynamics. Perhaps since I last used it they've had service packs but I don't have it installed on my system anymore. I think the Majestic version will be a far deeper simulation including circuit breaker panels )).
  16. In fact I should add that we seem to have a nice Dash 8 Q400 on the way from Majestic, so perhaps PMDG would consider an ATR 42/72 500/600?
  17. Yeah me too, in fact there are non-military C17's. In these threads I always add that there is a distinct lack of Russian aviation including modern airliners in the FS world, so PMDG why not surprise us with an IL-96!
  18. Please see my previous post re LLC. OK so I did some browsing of overclocking forums and it appears that for a Q9650 people are throwing figures around of Vcore max (apparently the lingo is "Vccmax") of 1.4V to 1.45V for 24/7 use and that temperatures will likely be the limiting factor. I'd really like to know where those figures come from? I'm tempted to push towards 1.4V unless the gains become foolishly deminishing. On the other hand my 775 board is only mid range so perhaps I should be happy if I can get it stable at 3.99GHz and run my memory at stock (albeit at 333MHz frequency latch rather than 400MHz)? By the way I should mention that I went from struggling to keep temps < 70C at 3.85GHz to pushing towards 4GHz with temps < about 65C by simply moving my PC case from under my desk to by my window where there is better ventilation and a draft! I can keep temps even lower if I open other windows in my house which increases the draft. And to think I was considering upgrading to a £80+ water cooling kit - no need to now!
  19. My memory is rated at 1066MHz 5-5-5-15 2.1V and has an Extreme Memory Profile (XMP). In BIOS the options are "Auto", "Profile2", and "Disabled". I'm currently overclocking the CPU but planning to keep the memory at stock values. My overclocked system passes Intel Burn Test and OCCT at 3.99GHz but keeps failing Prime95 at even 3.90GHz. So I'm wondering if it's the memory settings? Q1) What exactly does "Auto" configure (I assume Profile2 is the XMP profile)? Q2) Does the XMP profile keep the dram voltage at 2.1V? Q3) Should I disable XMP and set all the memory values manually? Q4) Is it better to set the dram voltage manually when overclocking the system? Current memory BIOS settings are below (I set "Performance Enhance" to "Standard" when testing a higher overclock). Thanks in advance for your replies.
  20. Nvidia inspector v1.9.6.9 is available and I was wondering if custom profiles can be corrupted if I use the upgrade button? It's not difficult to install v1.9.6.9 from scratch and customize the FSX profile again but I just wanted to know for future reference. Thanks in advance for your replies.
  21. I'm mainly runnig FSX and using Nvidia Inspector v1.9.6.8. Can I disable the Nvidia Display Driver Service to free up some resources? It's default setting is "automatic" in windows services. If so should I disable it from msconfig or services.msc?
  22. Yeah I see what you mean, I'm confusing mysefl! Just for reference my VID is 1.2750V. What I appreciate now is there is no Intel recommended Vcore max (1.3625 is just the upper VID - if you're unlucky!). So can I push VCore as far as my temps allow? Right now I'm just aiming for 3.99GHz but as the Q9650 is older hardware I'd like to push it higher.
  23. Thanks Word Not Allowed. But can't the FSX renderer be reloaded by changing from windowed to non-windowed mode and back again (or vice verse)?
  24. Something I forgot to add, the "Load" button on the settings page would suggest that CFG settings can be loaded between flights, but does that include manual edits or just in game changes from the settings menu?
  25. Thanks for your reply. For overclocking I always disable the C-states although after I've have found a stable overclock I try to tun EIST. As for LLC it's not recommended for Q2Q's apparently because of dangerous voltage spikes, not sure about other processors though. To be honest I'm a bit confused about how VCore relates to VID even though an explanation of VID is given in that article! The Intel spec says "VID Voltage Range" = 0.8500V - 1.3625V, so perhaps I'm misunderstanding VID max as VCore max? In that case I should be paying more attention to VID. E.g. when: VCore (BIOS) =1.3500V VCore (CPU-Z) = 1.312V VID (CoreTemp) = 1.2750V (Sorry to change the figures from before I'm actually overclocking as I write this!) The difference between VID max = 1.3625V and the above example of VID = 1.2750V gives me far more room to play with... perhaps those folks at VCore = 1.4something aren't that crazy! Does this make sense?
