  1. LAX was one time a base operating the Flag Ship Flight ANZ1, that flight was on a 747-400 operating from Auckland to LAX to Heathrow and return, they no longer operate that flight therefore operations in LAX has been scaled down to probably just contractors at this point. No longer a base of operations just a simple destination. The Auckland to New York flight now has the flight number ANZ1 but JFK is also just a destination too. The aircraft type used on the JFK route is the 787-9, the aircraft used on the LAX route is the 777 therefore not compatible If ANZ1 landed in LAX instead of JFK you bet the contractors in LAX wouldn't care, it has happened to me before and I've stood in a lobby of a hotel at 4 am with the hotel staff saying they will not honor the airlines vouchers, the airline must pay them directly before I get a key to a room. Therefore I would much prefer turning back instead of dealing with what I've been through before Just you guys be aware if you are traveling long haul and smaller airlines like Air New Zealand this is standard practice, you can complain on here but to be honest if you flew on United to New Zealand they would turn back too.
  2. Yes back in the 80s flying between Canada and New Zealand I've had fuel stops in Honolulu and Cook Islands on Air New Zealand, things were different back then. The most famous refueling stops in history would be Anchorage and Gander, did you ever read about that time when Fidel Castro went tobogganing with the kids in Gander? https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/fidel-castro-toboggan-fun-woman-memory-gander-1.3869323
  3. But its not what you think. They do have a flight that goes to Honolulu but that desk is only manned by contractors for checking in that flight, no Air New Zealand employees actually work in Honolulu just contractors, therefore no one for ANZ in Honolulu to handle a diverted flight like an airline like United could handle, or any agreements with local hotels or agreements with storage at the airport etc. Yes when you are flying in your nation with Air Canada they can land anywhere in Canada and get some support, but even that support is bad, a diverted flight from Halifax lands in Moncton instead and usually Air Canada is so unhelpful in those situations many are left stranded even though Moncton is in Air Canada's Network, it still doesn't work out well for the passengers. When Air New Zealand is flying into the USA and lands somewhere outside it's network it is near impossible to support the passengers. No one at a US Airport is obligated to help Air New Zealand passengers and the contractors they have to check in passengers on the one flight they service also change coats and do the same for many other airlines flying into that airport. It is the same reason that the Emirates flight I pointed out, they were turned back from Auckland, even though India was right next to them landing in India would be far worst for the passengers then going back to Dubai, therefore they go back. People in Europe or USA are not used to this because they have a better logistic support network when landing in an alternative airport that is within your airlines network. long haul flights don't have the same support when diverted to remote places therefore they turn around and go back, as a passenger I prefer this, I was once stranded in Los Angela's due to a mechanical failure and that was the worst experience I've ever had, going back is far better off
  4. This is common for airlines operating outside there regions on long range flights. If a United Flight was flying from LA to NY it wouldn't turn back it would land in Denver or Chicago and United can put passengers on other United Flights and that aircraft and crew will be rostered into the network, worst case scenario United will have hotel vouchers if needed. If Air New Zealand flying to New York lands somewhere else, they may not have staff at that airport, they may not have the ability to make arrangements or vouchers for local hotels, they may not have deals with other airlines at that airport, they do not have storage space at that airport for their aircraft, and yes it will disrupt other passengers on other flights that aircraft is scheduled on, and that aircraft and crew need to get back to NZ to get back into the roster. Also when New Zealand had the resent cyclone all aircraft flying into New Zealand where turned around and went back to their original destinations and that would have included US aircraft, some were over half way to New Zealand when turned back. This is standard practice for long range flights and to be honest best for the passengers. I wouldn't want to be stuck at an alternate airport, no hotels available, no other flights on other airlines available due to no agreements between airlines, if I get back to Auckland I have the most options and also the option of just going home and getting my money back Here is an example of an Emirates flight turned around due to the Cyclone in New Zealand, same situation, India was nearby but it is best for passengers to go back: https://www.thenationalnews.com/travel/2023/01/29/emirates-new-zealand-bound-superjumbo-turns-back-to-dubai-after-13-hour-flight-to-nowhere/
  5. This looks good and the dispatch features would be something I would enjoy. Also if you could do roles of Conductor or Brakeman on heritage rail operations that would be great too
  6. Yes I saw this the other day, it is great, this is a reminder that George Lucas + Stanley Kubrick = Star Trek
  7. My only reply at this point is this, because you are still not getting it, semantics, I'm going with the Rain Man 🤣
  8. Sure but I think you are reading far too much into what I said.... "I THINK QANTAS is still one of the only legacy airliners that has never had a crash during the modern jet era, impeccable safety record." Being from New Zealand what you are saying is not a national embarrassment like the Mount Erebus Disaster. You've taken my quote far too seriously. Reality is QANTAS went through the golden age of Jetliners without a disaster, they successfully operated the 707 which had 174 hull-loss accidents with a total of 3,039 fatalities, none of those fatalities from QANTAS, also the 747-200, 747SP etc etc etc, back then those had a higher frequency of disasters and QANTAS got through that era pretty much unscathed. I live on an island in the South Pacific, from where I am sitting this is a beautiful sunny afternoon with an ocean view, therefore NOT DEBATABLE, it is just being far too literal, I think I'll have a beer instead 🍻
  9. Really not sure what you are trying to debate. Air New Zealand had Mount Erebus, still a national embarrassment, they also had three others involving fatalities, Air Canada had Gimli Glider, although no one died it is a great example of forcing the Metric System on an Airline without proper training or implementation (they got off lucky), but also Air Canada had 6 others with fatalities including National Icon Stan Rogers may he RIP. American Airlines has too many to list, British Airways also too many to list, as does Air France has some very notable ones including Concord and Flight 447. Who else it there??? SAS - that would be a yes, Italia, another yes, Who can forget Malaysian Airlines??? Also notable, this list will go on as their are not many countries without a major aviation disaster. But yea you want to argue that the incident in Bangkok has some kind of severity matching what other nations and nations flag carrier have been through? I disagree, QANTAS has a great history and track record all things considered I stand by what I've said, not debatable
  10. I read another article saying the passengers felt 'left in the dark' but yes Aviate, Navigate, Communicate (to ATC). Passengers are briefed when the situation allows it. I think QANTAS is still one of the only legacy airliners that has never had a crash during the modern jet era, impeccable safety record.
  11. It is a respect thing, if I went to the Tomb of the Unknown Solder in the USA and stepped out of line I would be yelled at too, that is a site of importance in the USA. Monarchy is a head of state not a Disneyland mascot also a site of importance, culture and heritage
  12. Yea that's the return capsule this looks like a challenge for them
  13. I do have a shop and we do a Christmas Window every year, but we skipped it this year due to spikes in Vandalism and Theft. I could easily get sucked into an O-Scale Christmas Window in the next few years as we start doing windows again. I would be like Gomez Addams with my O-Scale smiling ear to ear 😁
  14. This was the article I read about it recently: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/08/sports/ncaabasketball/olivia-dunne-haley-jones-endorsements.html Yes a young amature athlete can make a million dollars before they even win anything in their sport. Like I said I still think Mary Lou Retton is the better athlete because with her it was all about her abilities as an athlete and not the highlights in her hair 🤣 But good for young people for making that kind of money
  15. The other biggest difference between today's athletes and the athletes in decades past are in the endorsements. Today's athletes have become half athlete and half super model because the amount of money their endorsements bring in is astronomically higher than the paycheck from their sporting abilities. I grew up with role models like Mary Lou Retton when image wasn't as important, recent NCAA rule changes means young athletes today get to collect money from, providing autographs, wearing branded clothing or accessories, making personal appearances, appearing in ads, monetizing social media etc, which means the athletes of today are already become millionaires even before their first appearance at the Olympic Games.
  16. Sorry late reply I got busy, the last line on that record was.... "There is no dark side in the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark. The only thing that makes it look light is the sun."
  17. I would still travel to Hawaii and not worry about it, those Volcanos are fairly isolated in their local regions and Hawaii is so big you don't need to be near them. I have one north of where I live that one is now acting up with earthquakes right now in the crater lake, when that one does go off we get a bit of ash in the atmosphere that creates haze but too far north for me to worry about. Nature doing what nature does. The biggest issue would be flight cancellations because of ash, you may get stuck in Hawaii for a week but that is not a bad thing
  18. The Dark Side of the Moon, and my heart goes Bump Bump, Bump Bump watching this Great Gig in the Sky 😁
  19. An aerial display or Parade Circuit of various aircraft types going at different speeds but all at the same altitude is risky, I wouldn't call this pilot error this was doomed at the planning stage, this really sucks for those that put their lives into this They do these circuits where I live but in WW1 era biplanes, those are much slower and have greater visibility so you never lose sight of others in the circuit. Their should never be a situation where you cannot see others in the parade circuit.
  20. So glad to see this, I was explaining to my 7 year old daughter the last time a rocket went to the moon I was only a 1 year old at that time, this is how long it has taken to get back there. My daughter has loved following Artemis and it's progress. This is going to be an amazing mission to watch
  21. I didn't realize it was 40 year anniversary but to be honest this is the anniversary of Microsoft purchasing Flight Simulator from Bruce Artwick of SubLogic, The original release was back in 1979 so to me that is the anniversary of this franchise, as that was when it all began
  22. It is time to eradicate those pesky viruses out of the true Earthlings on Earth, those viruses that keep evading the real Earthing's...
  23. There are more viruses in the universe then their are stars, we are a host and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, only our egos make us think we are worth more 🤣
  24. Great story except for one fact, it was not in two different centuries at the same time, the turn of the century is 1901 not 1900, therefore this happened one year before the turn of the century 🤣
